Writing Center

Students Studying

Welcome to The Writing Center

Find us early, come back often. You can improve your writing by working with a peer writing consultant as soon as you get an assignment, and regular feedback on your papers gives you the confidence and support you need to improve as a writer.

And even if you do not find us early, find us!  We are happy to work with you at whatever stage of the writing process you are at. Set up an online appointment here. If all appointment slots are taken, please contact the Writing Center director, Dr. Jeff Morris, for more options.

The Carroll College Writing Center provides a place outside the classroom where the student and writing consultant can work together with the common goal of helping the student become a more skillful and independent writer. A consultant will thus help you develop the skills of thinking critically, exploring ideas, composing, revising, and editing. The Writing Center provides informed and effective help for students of diverse cultures, throughout the academic disciplines, and through all levels of writing experience.

Because we serve the broader academic community in educating the whole person, we do not simply fix writing for students. The writing does get better, but that is because we help students achieve the skills that allow them to improve writing for themselves.

Dr. Jeff Morris, Director, Simperman Learning Commons.  I became a professor of English because I loved working with students in Boise State University’s writing center when I was an undergraduate.  I am a big believer in getting students to help other students learn, so I’m grateful for this opportunity to direct Carroll’s Writing Center.  Born and raised in Boise, ID, I earned my M.A. and Ph. D. from Penn State. I now call Helena home since it is here that my wife and I settled down to raise our family.  I love trail running, hiking, skiing, and as you can see from the picture, kayaking.  I have had a long and fulfilling career at Carroll, and am ready to help you flourish in this academic community.
