MSW Courses at Carroll College

Master of Social Work ClassroomOur clinically-focused curriculum is built on four emphasis areas that inform everything we do:

  • Trauma-informed / resilience-focused care
  • Integrated behavioral health care
  • Evidence-based practice
  • Professional leadership

Our program offers two tracks: the traditional track is for those who do not have an undergraduate degree in social work from a CSWE-accredited program, while the advanced-standing track is generally for people with an undergraduate degree in social work (BSW or BSSW) from a CSWE-accredited program. 

The traditional track is a 60-credit hour program option that can be completed in 21 months of full-time study. A part-time option is available, however, is also available. 

The traditional program includes generalist and specialized coursework. In generalist courses, students gain foundational knowledge and skills that support effective social work practice. Generalist courses included in Carroll's MSW program are:

  • Diversity and Social Justice
  • Human Behavior and the Social Environment
  • Generalist Practice I - Individuals and Families
  • Generalist Practice II - Groups, Organizations, and Communities
  • Policy and Advocacy in Social Work Practice
  • Research for Social Work Practice
  • Field Practicum (two courses)
  • Field Seminar (two courses)

In specialized courses, students gain knowledge and skills needed to prosper as clinical social workers. Specialized courses including in Carroll's MSW program are:

  • Clinical Assessment and Diagnosis
  • Clinical Methods III - Integrated and Interdisciplinary Care
  • Substance Use and Co-occurring Disorders
  • Evaluation of Practice
  • Leadership and Management
  • Mindfulness Practices
  • Elective courses (two courses)
  • Field Practicum (two courses)
  • Field Seminar (two courses)

Carroll's advanced-standing track is a 30-credit hour option that can generally be completed in nine months of full-time study. Advanced standing is only available to those who have earned a BSW or BSSW from an accredited social work program.

Carroll's advanced standing track is an excellent option for social workers who are interested in developing their skills and knowledge and increasing professional opportunities.
