About the MSW Program

Master of Social Work

We are Mission driven.

The mission of Carroll College's MSW Program is to educate clinical social workers who prevent and solve complex social problems negatively affecting vulnerable and underserved individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities in Montana, across the nation, and throughout the world.

Our online program is rooted in the principles and methods of culturally competent trauma-informed care, integrated care, and evidence-based practice, preparing ethical and competent social work leaders who elevate community health and functioning and promote social and economic justice through a focus on strengths, resilience, and empowerment.

Change takes knowledge and skills.

Carroll's curriculum is built on four emphasis areas that inform everything we do:

  1. Trauma-informed / resilience-focused care
  2. Integrated health care
  3. Evidence-based practice
  4. Professional leadership

Integrating these focal areas throughout our curriculum and reinforcing them with hands-on skill development activities, offered in-person or online, ensures you graduate with tools you can use in various clinical practice settings with diverse client populations.

Why emphasize these perspectives?

In the case of trauma-informed / resilience-focused practice, integrated health care, and evidence-based practice, these approaches are clinical "best practices" that have been implemented in health, behavioral health, and social service systems across the country.

We focus on professional leadership because social workers often assume important and influential roles in the organizations and communities they serve.

By supporting the development of leadership skills, we help you leverage your strengths and capacities to rise higher professionally and significantly impact vulnerable and underserved populations.

Carroll College's MSW program is seeking accreditation through the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), the national association representing social work education in the United States. At this time, Carroll's MSW program has achieved Candidacy for Accreditation by the Council on Social Work Education’s Commission on Accreditation.

Candidacy for a baccalaureate or master’s social work program by the Council on Social Work Education’s Commission on Accreditation indicates that it has made progress toward meeting criteria for the assessment of program quality evaluated through a peer review process.  A program that has attained Candidacy has demonstrated a commitment to meeting the compliance standards set by the Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards, but has not yet demonstrated full compliance.

Students who enter programs that attain Candidacy in or before the academic year in which they begin their program of study will be retroactively recognized as having graduated from a CSWE-accredited program once the program attains Initial Accreditation. Candidacy is typically a three-year process and attaining Candidacy does not guarantee that a program will eventually attain Initial Accreditation. Candidacy applies to all program sites and program delivery methods of an accredited program. Accreditation provides reasonable assurance about the quality of the program and the competence of students graduating from the program.
