WHO DESIGNED THESE HIDEOUS HATS ANYWAY? OK: the mortarboard and baggy black gown don't exactly add up to a "fashion moment," but 265 outstanding Carroll seniors will be boldly wearing them nonetheless as they traverse the PE Center stage to receive their hard-won degrees during Carroll's 101st Commencement this Saturday, May 7. Leading up to the splendid ceremony are several can't miss events for students, their families, Carroll alumni, faculty and staff: Today: Friday  Commencement Rehearsal, PE Center, 1 p.m.-all grads to attend Unveiling of Class of 2011 Bricks on Alumni Walk (between St. Charles and Simperman Science Hall, near St. Albert's Hall), 3 p.m. A by-invitation-only dinner for our Golden Grads from the classes of 1951 and 1961: These esteemed alumni will enjoy a ticketholders-only meal in the Campus Center with our Board of Trustees members. In all, around 21 members of our 50-year jubilarians will attend graduation, along with two who earned their degrees 60 years ago: Dr. James Dean and Hank Burgess, who would go on to serve as a beloved English professor and coach of the Smokers for several decades. Attending our Golden Grads will be professors from their college years, including Nursing Professor Alice McCarthy, History Professor Rev. William Greytak, Physics and Math Professor Bill Lannan, Chemistry Professor Guido Bugni, plus former Carroll President Monsignor Joseph Harrington. Tomorrow: Saturday Baccalaureate Mass at the Cathedral of St. Helena, 10 a.m.-by ticket only, due to limited space Commencement Brunch, Campus Center, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. by ticket only, due to limited space Commencement Ceremony, PE Center, 2 p.m.-Grads and faculty will line up on south lawn of Guadalupe Hall at 1:30 p.m. to proceed into the PE Center. DAY OF RECKONING IS NIGH At Commencement, the college will be conferring several special honors, three of which are surprises that cannot be published until 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 7-these secret awards will be revealed in next week's edition of QNs! The news that's street legal now is below: The title of professor emeritus will be conferred on two retiring faculty members: Dr. Richard Lambert (photo right), professor of philosophy at Carroll for 41 years, and Dr. Roderick Thronson (photo left), professor of education for 27 years. The Borromeo Award for outstanding service will be conferred on the elementary and secondary Catholic schools of Montana, with this honor being formally accepted by Dr. Patrick Haggarty, the superintendant of Montana Catholic Schools. The college will confer an honorary doctorate on Carroll alumnus Rev. Edward Kohler (photo left) for his ministry to the Little Flower Parish in Browning, Montana, and co-founding of Browning's De La Salle Blackfeet School. Our Golden Grads, in bright yellow cap and gown, will receive special diplomas for their long service as proud Carroll alumni. The Class of 2011 senior response speaker, chosen for this unique role by his classmates, will be communication and public relations major Matthew Sewell of Deer Lodge, Mont. The Bishop Gilmore Memorial Trophy for Outstanding Scholarship, for seniors who have attained the highest grade-point average after four years at Carroll, will go to: Elysia Joanne Andrews, a nursing major from Kalispell, Mont. Benjamin Matthew Dill, a math: physics major from Helena, Mont. Ryne William Dougherty, a biology major from Missoula, Mont. GREEN FRESHMAN ARRIVES ON CAMPUS Last Friday's Arbor Day celebration saw the grand finale planting of a new tree outside the Campus Center, complete with a blessing from former Carroll President Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen and a cast of hole diggers including the kids from Broadwater Elementary School, assisted by Halo the Carroll Saints mascot. A video, courtesy of the SAVE Foundation, is online to showcase the day's fun at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rLkRjrv-uw  In a related story, last Saturday's Helena Clean Up Day sponsored by Sodexo drew dozens of Carroll volunteers, who hit the streets to pick up garbage on Green Meadow Drive, the field on Custer Avenue and beyond. Everyone worked over two hours and in all gathered up nearly 100 bags of roadside waste. In addition to a great crew of students, Mason Siddick, class of 2010, created the logo and was the community promoter for this successful event.  MEASURED STEPS Ballet Montana Academy, directed by Carroll artist in residence and director of dance Sallyann Mulcahy, will present a spring performance entitled Measured Steps next Friday, May 13, at 7:30 p.m. in the Carroll College Performing Arts Center (Old North, St. Charles Hall). The production will feature the talents of five aspiring professional ballet dancers from Helena, Livingston, and Bozeman, Mont., performing classical and contemporary ballet. For an operatic interlude, operatic baritone Kevin Matthews will also sing favorites from Man of La Mancha. Admission is open to the public for $10. Ballet Montana Academy is in residence at Carroll and is the only program of its kind, allowing year-round professional ballet preparation for aspiring pro dancers, who also have the rare experience of an apprenticeship with seasoned professionals of the Ballet Montana troupe during its summer performance season. Ballet Montana dancers from companies all over the US will return to campus this June in anticipation of the summer performances in Helena at the end of July. Stay tuned for more details in future editions of QNs. STUDENT NEWS Today, May 6, Carroll's Department of Military Science and Maj. Mark McGinley invite the public to the commissioning of Zackary Cashman, second lieutenant Oregon National Guard, Military Intelligence, and Miranda Mireles, second lieutenant Montana National Guard, Ordinance, at 4 p.m. in the Montana State Capitol Rotunda. Jacquelyn Wilner (photo left), a sophomore psychology major from Spokane, Wash., has received a $1,000 Reverend Frank L. Harrington Scholarship from the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans in Canada, United States Unit (ANAVICUS). The award presentation took place on Thursday, April 21, 2011, at Carroll. The Reverend Frank L Harrington (ANAVICUS) Scholarship was established in 1987 by the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans in Canada, Unites States Unit to recognize an outstanding Carroll sophomore or junior. The scholarship was named in honor of Father Harrington, national chaplain of the American Legion in 1947-48.  Father Harrington was a spiritual leader, teacher and patriot, as shown by his service to Mount Saint Charles College (later renamed Carroll College) as dean of men and professor of mathematics.  At the April 27 Honors Convocation, three students were announced as the winners of the 2011 Hunthausen Outstanding Citizenship Award. Accepting the award were Kari Halvorson (photo left), Jade Johnstone and Travis Marshall (photo right). Halvorson has volunteered over 300 hours at St. Peter's Hospice and worked with a number of nonprofits, including Helena Food Share, Intermountain Children's Home, Carroll's recycling program, the Big Brothers Big Sisters and Carroll Campus Ministry. Johnstone is the first Carroll student to have received the Hunthausen award twice, and she earned it through tireless work serving the poor in Montana and overseas through the Carroll Outreach Team, in her medical service to Montana's migrant worker community and in regularly preparing and serving meals at God's Love Homeless Shelter. Since his freshman year, Marshall has volunteered at St. Peter's Hospital Wellness Center and has also served as a Big Brother and joined the Carroll Outreach Team journey to provide dental care in Moldova. ALUMNI NEWS In the News Billie Shepard, class of 1984, was recently featured in a news story covering the success of Montana women business owners. Shepard owns the Pan Handler cooking store in Helena, and she faced struggle just getting financing for a business loan, after years of supporting her family on her own. Petersen's work, Four Songs, features music set to the poetry of Ed Noonan, Carroll adjunct professor of Fine Arts and Myrna Loy Center executive director. Admission is a freewill offering at the door. Petersen's Four Songs was written especially for Diagenesis. After its Helena debut, Diagenesis will present Petersen's work on tour, with concert venues in St. Paul Minn., Chicago, Ill., and Boston, Mass. A full press release on Dr. Petersen's world-premiere composition is online at: http://www.carroll.edu/about/pressreleases.php?id=14845 Lori Newell has been hired to serve as the administrative assistant to the Carroll vice president for finance and administration. Her background is in the banking industry in Bend, Ore., and Billings, Mont., where she served as an accounting manager, senior CFO assistant, compliance auditor, consumer loan representative, and mortgage loan assistant.  The Hunthausen Center for Peace and Justice recently inaugurated its Carroll webpage at: https://www.carroll.edu/academics/hunthausen/index.cc. Dr. Christopher Fuller, holder of the Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen Endowed Professorship in Peace and Social Justice, has also initiated a blog on the site to address contemporary issues in light of Christian theology and Catholic Social Teaching.  CAMPUS MINISTRY Last Sunday's Sacraments of Initiation celebration was a lovely year-end event, with 12 students welcomed into the Church by Bishop of Helena George Leo Thomas, professor emeritus of sociology Father Jerry Lowney and Father Marc Lenneman, our director of Campus Ministry and college chaplain. ATHLETICS After eight successful seasons as head women's basketball coach at Carroll College, Shawn Nelson (photo right) is saying goodbye. This week, he accepted a job in the same capacity at NCAA Division II Central Washington U. Nelson reached the 200-career victory milestone this past winter and leaves with a 201-72 mark. As a player, Nelson started for three seasons under Carroll coaching legend Gary Turcott. Nelson graduated in 1996 and was inducted into the school's athletic hall of fame in 2008. He served as an assistant under Turcott - also a hall of fame inductee - for the next seven years before taking over the women's program prior to the 2003-2004 season. The Saints women averaged 25 wins per season under Nelson's leadership and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament five times. Director of Athletics Bruce Parker (photo left) has been invited to serve a four-year term on the Executive Committee of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. He will represent NCAA and NAIA directors of athletics from the states of Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. Carroll Athletics complete coverage is online at: http://www.carroll.edu/athletics/index.cc COMING EVENTS Now through May 8: To commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day and the National Days of Remembrance, Carroll's Corette Library hosts a free exhibit of Holocaust-related projects completed by Carroll students in History 382: The Second World War Era. The works, displayed on the library's first floor, examine a variety of issues within the context of the "Final Solution" and take different approaches to visually representing the Holocaust. All are welcome to view these works on the theme of "justice and accountability in the face of genocide: what have we learned?"  Ongoing: Sallyann Mulcahy, Carroll artist in residence and the director of Ballet Montana and Ballet Montana Academy, also in residence at Carroll, is offering for the first time an adult ballet class open to men and women of all ages. Classes take place each Monday from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. in the Arthur Vining Davis Dance Studio downstairs in the Campus Center.
