Partners in Health

Carroll nursing students recently held a reception thanking their Partners in Health participants. The program partners sophomore students in their first year in the nursing program with active seniors in the community in order to form therapeutic relationships.

The program, which as been a component of the first year/first semester nursing curriculum for five years, provides the opportunity for students to visit their senior clients four to five times during the semester where they conduct a four dimensional assessment. The students develop their interviewing and basic health assessment skills while also forming bonds with their senior patients.

Carroll wishes to thank our seniors in the community who volunteer to participate in this invaluable program for our nursing students.

For more information on the Partners in Health program, please contact Terri John at 406-447-5491, tjohn@carroll.edu.

Global Mission - Local Action

The 2014-15 Carroll Enactus Team

Following a successful year of local partnership projects, Enactus, one of the fastest growing clubs on the Carroll campus, has once again received multiple grants in order to pursue a variety of projects around Helena. The $4,000 in grants include the AB InBev Better World recycling grant, Uncap Opportunities for Women–Supported by The Coca-Cola Foundation, Walmart Women’s Economic Empowerment, and the Sam's Club Step Up for Small Business.

“I am confident that our team would be able to make a positive impact even without these grants, but getting significant funding from these Enactus partners allows us to make changes of an unimaginable magnitude in the Helena community,” said club president, Justine Songey ‘15. The businesses the students will be using these funds to support include Louie’s Casa Diego, SAVE Recycling, and the Florence Crittenton home, among others.

Though the club has secured grants for these projects, students are currently fundraising to generate money for the spring trip. The club will be selling a limited edition, signature print featuring an opening game shot from the 2013 Carroll Homecoming game against Tech, generously donated by Grant Hanson. The print will be on a 24x32 stretch canvas for $200, available beginning in January. Please contact Jenessa McElrath, fundraising chair, for any questions on canvas orders, project information, or to donate at jmcelrath@carroll.edu.

Tallying the Results

On November 4, students in Assistant Professor of Political Science, Dr. Alex Street’s class on “Elections, Political Parties, and Public Opinion” conducted an exit poll in Lewis and Clark County.

The 14 students designed a survey of 11 questions, and collected responses from 957 helpful citizens on Election Day.  Most of the responses were gathered in Helena, but students also traveled to East Helena, Lincoln and the Helena Valley.

The students wrote research papers on the results from the exit poll, which are summarized by topic here.
