Boundless Compassion

Father Greg Boyle, S.J., founder and executive director of Homeboy Industries and author of the New York Times bestseller, Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion, will be sharing his message of kinship, compassion, redemption and social justice based on his 20+ years working with former gang members in East L.A with the Helena community on November 4 at 7 p.m. in the Helena Middle School auditorium.

Father Greg’s book was the 2014 summer reading assignment for incoming freshmen at Carroll and his visit is sponsored by the Carroll Alpha Seminar Program.

Father Greg is the founder and executive director of Homeboy Industries, the largest gang intervention, rehabilitation and re-entry program in the United States, now in its 25th year. His dedication to finding a place for all in our society brought him to the Boyle Heights community of East Los Angeles, where he served as pastor of Dolores Mission Church, from 1986 through 1992. It was there that Father Greg started what would become Homeboy Industries, a nonprofit organization that employs and trains more than 300 former gang members every year in seven social enterprises. Homeboy Industries also provides critical services to the 12,000 people who walk through the doors every year seeking a better life.

This event is free and the Carroll and Helena community are invited to attend.

People Polling

As thousands of local citizens visit the polls on November 4, students in Assistant Professor of Political Science Dr. Street’s, PO 312, “Elections, Political Parties, and Public Opinion” class will be taking to the streets to conduct an exit poll in Lewis & Clark County.

The class of 14 students created a survey of 11 questions, which they will be asking voters to complete once they have cast their ballots.

The class will then analyze the results to understand the voting choices of citizens with different backgrounds, e.g. government workers, rural and urban residents, and gun owners.

“The project provides a chance to learn how to design, carry out and present research,” said Dr. Street. “We hope that the results will provide fresh insights into Helena and the political profile of the county."

The project will be completed in December and results will be published on the Carroll website.

Assistant Professor of Communications, Dr. Doreen Kutufam, is currently on sabbatical in Ghana working on her research on Dipo.

In the course of familiarizing herself with the academic scene in Ghana, she had a number of consultations and a presentation with the President of Central University College.  As a result, Dr. Kutufam has been appointed as a visiting professor/scholar with the communication department at the college (effective October 1 through December 30).
