Dear Carroll College Nursing Community,

As we embark on a new year, my heart is full of gratitude and pride for the incredible work and dedication demonstrated by our students, faculty, staff, and partners. Nursing is a vocation that demands not only intellectual rigor but also deep compassion and resilience. At Carroll College, I am continually inspired by how our community rises to meet these challenges with excellence, grace, and a profound sense of purpose.

This year, we celebrate the academic, clinical, and professional achievements of our nursing students, who continue to set the standard for excellence in healthcare. From excelling in rigorous coursework to demonstrating compassionate care during clinical rotations, our students embody the core values of Carroll College and the nursing profession. Whether through patient advocacy, innovative problem-solving, or leadership in the classroom and beyond, our students remind us of the powerful impact that nurses can have on the world.

In addition to our ongoing efforts to foster academic and clinical excellence, we remain committed to cultivating a culture of gratitude and service. Nursing is about making a difference in the lives of others, and we are immensely thankful for the contributions of every member of our community who helps to make this mission a reality. To our faculty, whose mentorship guides the next generation of nurses, to our clinical partners who provide invaluable hands-on experience, and to our donors who make so many of our opportunities possible—thank you for your unwavering support.

This year also brings exciting opportunities for growth and innovation within our program. From new collaborations in healthcare advocacy to expanded resources for experiential learning, we are building a future that ensures every Carroll College nursing graduate is prepared to lead with skill, integrity, and compassion.

As we move forward together, let us embrace the challenges and opportunities of the year ahead with courage, determination, and an abiding commitment to the values that define our profession. I am grateful to be part of this journey with you, and I look forward to all that we will accomplish together.

With gratitude and best wishes,

Lauren Swant, DNP, MSN, RNC-NIC, CNE, CPHQ

Carroll’s Nursing Program Expresses Gratitude

Every November, nursing students, faculty, and staff enjoy sharing what they are thankful for on the Nursing Thanksgiving tree. Responses often focus on family, friends, pets, education, health, and faith. If you were filling out a leaf, what would you write? Counting our blessings brings more awareness of how many blessings we have and helps us pay attention to things we often take for granted.

One of the things we are especially thankful for is our clinical partnerships! Our students express their thanks in this short video.

Carroll Nursing Grads at the Mayo Clinic

In this edition of the nursing newsletter, we spotlight three 2024 Accelerated Nursing graduates who began their nursing careers at the renowned Mayo Clinic in Rochester this fall. They join nine other Carroll nursing alumni who have joined this prestigious healthcare system since 2021. Read their reflections below:

Faith DerbyEvery day reminds me of what it means to be a Carroll nurse—dedicated to providing holistic, individualized care for each patient. I wouldn't be where I am today without the unwavering support of Carroll’s Nursing Department, which continues even after graduation.

As a new grad, I feel more confident and prepared than ever. I am truly blessed that my education led me to working at the top hospital in the world. The experiences I’m gaining here are laying a strong foundation for the rest of my nursing career.

~ Faith Derby, ACNU '24, Helena, MT

Henry PhillipI work in a 37-bed Internal Medicine and Hospice unit. The typical patients on the unit are vitally stable but have a long list of comorbidities that complicate their treatment plan. I see new conditions each day and enjoy learning how the medical team approaches care and how patients navigate life. The time spent in clinical, especially on the med-surg unit at St. Peter's, has been beneficial because the time helped me develop an understanding of how to structure my day efficiently while collaborating with a multidisciplinary healthcare team.

The interactions that I have had with co-workers have been the most impactful element of my experience so far. I admire the passion Mayo employees have for the values of Mayo Clinic and their belief in the sacred nature of the patient-health professional relationship. I am grateful for the opportunity that I have at the Mayo Clinic and believe I will grow into a caring skilled nurse.

~ Henry Phillip, ACNU '24, Butte, MT

Steven SantosMy journey as a new grad nurse at Mayo Clinic is both challenging and incredibly rewarding. Working at the #1 ranked hospital in the world is an opportunity that inspires me daily, as I grow and learn in an environment that truly revolves around Mayo’s core values—respect, compassion, healing, and excellence—allow me to practice in a culture where the needs of the patient always come first. It’s a privilege to bring strength and hope to patients during some of their most vulnerable moments.

Starting my career in a heart/lung transplant progressive care unit has been both intense and enriching. I’m rapidly building my expertise in cardiac rhythms, detailed heart and lung assessments, and learning how to respond promptly to changes in patient conditions. Being part of a team that provides patients with a second chance at life is deeply inspiring and reminds me of the impact we have as nurses.

Nursing Program Highlights RESILIENCE

Portrait of Johnson, Janet

Did you know that "nearly 18% of newly licensed registered nurses leave the profession within the first year" (ANA, 2023)? Thankfully, we have not seen this level of attrition among Carroll nursing graduates. However, every year, we seek feedback from our graduates, and there was a trend identified about being prepared for the specific realities of navigating interpersonal relationships with colleagues, patients, and families; managing stress; preventing burnout; and impacting change in a broken system.

Given this feedback and the startling national statistics, we asked ourselves if there was more we could do to prepare our graduates. First, we had to identify some of the reasons behind this trend. We know graduates face high-stress situations, ethical dilemmas, staffing shortages, loss of experienced nurses in all areas of healthcare, effects of a global pandemic, etc., which can all be emotionally challenging and can lead to burnout. After deliberation and preparation, this fall semester, we have instituted a resiliency course for our nursing students to help meet this identified need. NU289 Resiliency for Life is currently offered during the sophomore year for traditional and accelerated track nursing students.

A resiliency course for undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students equips future nurses with the emotional and psychological tools necessary to thrive in the demanding, high-stress healthcare environment. The course aims to help students develop coping strategies, stress management techniques, and a mindset geared towards adaptability. By fostering resilience, students learn to manage their own well-being and enhance patient care. This foundational skill set contributes to more effective communication, improved teamwork, and a heightened ability to face the complexities of the healthcare system.

We hope that the resiliency course prepares BSN students to confront challenges head-on, promoting a culture of self-care and emotional intelligence that can improve job satisfaction and reduce turnover rates in the nursing profession. Ultimately, fostering resilience in nursing education not only benefits individual graduates’ feelings of preparedness but also enhances the overall quality of patient care and contributes to healthier healthcare systems.
