Carroll’s teacher education program for secondary education (grades 5-12) requires you to complete either a broadfield major or a major and a minor. If you are interested in pursuing a secondary education degree, you should contact a faculty member within your elected field of study, and you also must seek additional counsel from an advisor within the Education Department.

About the Program

Carroll’s reputation for excellent academic programs in a wide range of disciplines will ensure that you gain the depth of understanding you need to be effective in the classroom (the content), while the education faculty will provide you with consistent evaluation and feedback, coach you through your student teaching placements, and give you the skills you need to become an excellent educator (the pedagogy).

Pursuit of a secondary education degree requires acceptance into Carroll’s teacher education program. 

Teacher education advances this mission as it works within Carroll College’s Teacher Education Conceptual Framework. That framework is built upon a liberal arts education, structured by traditional educational philosophies, and embraced by an atmosphere of dignity, which values justice for all persons. The goal of Carroll College’s Teacher Education Program is to assist students in developing teaching competencies in their chosen fields and to help them become educational leaders capable of responding to their students’ individual needs.

AN 218

Intro Native Am Studies (ND)

Cultural Diversity, Social Science. This course covers a broad range of prehistoric, historic, and cultural issues pertaining to American Indians. The course will cover diversity among tribes including political organization, social organization, economics, subsistence, and current issues.

ED 318

Content Area Reading & Sec Teach Methods

Advanced Writing. Content Area Reading & Secondary Teaching Methods. This course considers classroom planning, lesson presentation skills, and instructional equipment and materials. Students study the development of listening, speaking, vocabulary, reading, and writing, and learn assessment techniques as well as strategies to improve study skills, writing, and reading, while teaching content areas. Students analyze text and electronic reading materials used in content areas. A 45-hour exploratory experience in a public school classroom is required. Prior field experiences will be analyzed to determine grade level placement for this field experience.

SPED 200

Introduction to Exceptional Children

This course provides a broad overview of the field of special education and the characteristics and needs of children and youth with disabilities. Historical perspectives, legal aspects, the full range of educational exceptionalities, and teaching adaptations are surveyed. Students will examine the nature and needs of students with exceptionalities as well as the educational programming and technology needed to help those students become competent workers and responsible, valued citizens. Collaboration and inclusion are emphasized.

Science for Secondary Education (5-12)

The Biology, Chemistry & Physics Secondary Education major is designed for students who seek careers providing personal fulfillment and service to others.  Its mission is to prepare graduates who are scientifically literate and who recognize both the practical usefulness and the inherent value of a liberal arts education.

We seek to give students a breadth of experience to be able to effectively educate the next generation of students in the natural sciences.

To be licensed to teach in a secondary school in Montana, grades 5-12, students at Carroll must complete a secondary education major or a K-12 major. Students interested in a secondary education major or a K-12 major should contact not only individuals within the major department, but also must seek additional counsel from an advisor within the Department of Education. Students pursuing licensure in secondary education must be accepted into the Teacher Education Program.

Secondary Education for Mathematics (5-12)

To be licensed to teach in a secondary school in Montana, grades 5-12, students at Carroll must complete a secondary education major or a K-12 major. Students interested in a secondary education major or a K-12 major should contact not only individuals within the major department, but also must seek additional counsel from an advisor within the Department of Education. Students pursuing licensure in secondary education must be accepted into the Teacher Education Program.

Secondary Education for Social Studies (5-12)

This broadfield major comprises at least 54 semester credits of content-area course work, with a concentration in history and political science, and additional course work in economics, geography, psychology, and/or sociology. Since the major and the minor are combined in this program, a teaching minor is not required for licensure.
