The Filix Gardening Scholarship

Here at the Filix, we provide gardening advice and guides for homesteaders and homeowners. Our mission is to help people start their own gardens and grow vegetables, fruits, and other kinds of plants to achieve self-sufficiency.

It is our belief that self-sufficiency is one of the worthiest goals one should aspire to accomplish. Gardening is an indispensable activity for anyone who would like to become self-sufficient.

The Filix Gardening Scholarship is a $1000 award for both undergraduate and graduate students who have a passion for gardening.

Our scholarship program may appeal particularly to students who major in :

  • Agronomy
  • Agriculture Education
  • Floriculture
  • Horticulture
  • Landscape Design
  • Botany, Biology
  • Forestry
  • Wildlife Science
  • Plant Pathology/Science
  • City (Rural & Urban) Planning
  • Habitat or Forest/Systems Ecology
  • Environmental Concerns (Management: Environmental, Horticulture Resource/Environmental Behavior)
  • Environmental Conservation (inc. Engineering, etc.)
  • Land Management and/or other related or allied subjects.

However, no previous expertise in the domain of gardening is required to apply for this scholarship; willingness to write an essay about gardening and homesteading is sufficient to be a candidate.

Participation Guidelines

Candidates are required to properly research and write an essay of 1500 to 2000 words about how people living in the urban area can adopt the sustainable lifestyle. In other words, what are the ways or steps people can take in order to reduce carbon footprint and their use of Earth’s natural resources?

The scholarship will be awarded to the candidate that provides the best essay on this topic. Evaluation and assessment of the essay will be done by experts on this topic.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Filix scholarship, you need to be currently enrolled in a high school, college or university.

The essay you submit along with your application should be original and unique. You are also expected to follow academic guidelines in the writing of your essay.

Here are the criteria we are looking for in your essay:

  1. Originality
  2. Creativity
  3. Feasibility

How to Apply

The first step is to write a 1500-2000 word essay covering the above-mentioned topic.

Once you’re done with your essay, send it to apply@thefilix.com in a Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or Adobe PDF format.

Along with your essay, please include:

  • Full name with address and phone number
  • Name of your school or university
  • Proof of student

Deadline

  • Application Deadline: December 1st
  • Winner Announcement: February 15th

The award is for school tuition so the $1000 scholarship check will be written out and sent directly to the student’s educational institution.

NB: Students can only apply once in any 12-month period.
