HELENA – Carroll College debate teams swept to victory at the Carroll BP World Debate tournament held on Carroll's campus, September 15-17. The field included teams from New York, Washington, Idaho and Montana.
The Talking Saints placed three of the four teams in the finals, with the fourth from Northwest University in Seattle.
The event was won by Carroll juniors Jonathan Groux of Salem, Oregon, and Nick Taffs of Helena. Also in the finals were first-years Josh Mansfield from Pocatello, Idaho, and Teigen Tremper of Whitefish, Montana, plus Parker Gunderson of Billings, Montana, and his partner Jackson Richards of Spokane, Washington.
Mansfield and Tremper were honored as the best novice team.
Mansfield was named the top speaker in the tournament, just ahead of Jonathan Groux, who was second. Other Talking Saints ranked in the top ten included Gunderson in fourth, senior Luke Kendall of Hamilton, Montana, in fifth, Tremper in sixth, and Taffs in ninth. Gunderson was named top novice speaker.
The tournament was preceded by a World Debate workshop led by Dr. Steven Llano of St. John's in New York. Llano is a professor of rhetoric and one of the nation’s most respected coaches.
"We call this event a Teaching Tournament," said Carroll coach Brent Northup, "because of all the training that takes place during the weekend. I taught a beginner’s class and Steve taught an advanced workshop. It’s all designed to jumpstart the year. The schools all seemed to enjoy their time at Carroll."
Some of Carroll's top teams did not compete, and instead helped administer the three-day event.
Carroll also sent three students to Colorado College on September 22-24 to compete against some of the nation’s finest universities in speech and interpretation. Michael Fuller, a sophomore from Helena, and Jacob Rosen, a senior from Huntington Beach, California, both advanced to championship rounds in impromptu speaking.
The season starts slowly for the Talking Saints, with the bulk of the semester’s competition bunched between mid-October and Thanksgiving. During that time the team will travel to Calgary, Spokane, Denver and Portland.
This year's Talking Saints roster consists of 27 students who attended high schools from throughout the West from Arizona to California to Washington to Glendive, Montana.
