Talking Saints Clean Up in Casper

Talking Saints in Casper

HELENA – A dozen Carroll College Talking Saints headed to Casper, Wyoming, on November 1-2, where each one of them won at least one award and the team won first place in overall school sweepstakes. The team came home with 31 awards.

“We only had seven first-year and five upperclass team members with us,” said coach Brent Northup. “And the new members were nearly as successful as the veterans. Five of the eight debaters in the championship round were Carroll frosh. How great is that? We left a few key team members at home to study organic chemistry, so we were surprised and delighted to do so well. We celebrated their success with delicious barbecue before heading home.”

For the second straight year, senior Michael Fuller of Helena was named the Best Individual at the tournament, winning the Gretchen Wheeler trophy. Fuller had a career tournament, making finals in all six of his events, winning duo and persuasion, while finishing in the top three in prose, persuasion, program interpretation and poetry.

Fuller’s duo partner Eleanor Ferrone, a sophomore from Hastings, Nebraska, won three awards including first in prose and second in impromptu.

“Michael and Eleanor both have extraordinary discipline and an inexhaustible work ethic,” said Northup. “Their success is a testament to their character. What they do in life, they do well. Thankfully, forensics is one of their passions.”

Junior Teigen Tremper of Whitefish, Montana, won three awards as did senior Peri Dropping of Redmond, Washington.

Three of the four teams in open debate finals were from Carroll. The finalists included runners up Dropping and partner Brady Clark, a first-year student from Madison, Wisconsin; finalist Rylie Weeks of Kalispell and her partner Vinny Gallardo of Butte; and finalist Maddy Horak of Boise, Idaho, and Ryan Vosen of Kalispell. Carroll won 10 of the top 14 speaker awards in debate, led by Gallardo who was fourth-best open speaker and second-best novice speaker.

The first-year debate team of Roisin O’Neill of Lake Oswego, Oregon, and Hellie Badaruddin of Missoula, won novice debate.

The Talking Saints semester ends November 8-10 with the first leg of the regional championship held at Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon. The second leg occurs in January at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon. The Talking Saints have won or shared the regional title for 29 consecutive years.
