October 3, 2014 QuickNotes: Farewell Dr. Kerins

October 3, 2014

Saying Goodbye to a Saintly President

We are very saddened to share the news that Dr. Frank Kerins, former president of Carroll College, passed away October 2, in Helena.

Dr. Francis J. Kerins served as the 11th president of Carroll College from 1974-1989. He was the first layman to hold this position and with 15 years of service, he was the second longest serving president in Carroll history.

Under his tenure, he oversaw a number of important initiatives. Through his support and direction, the Mission Statement, written by Rev. Jeremiah Sullivan, was adopted by the Board of Trustees and remains in place to this day.  In addition, the Corette Library was financed and constructed during his time in office. He was also tremendously active in promoting and encouraging ties between the Helena community and the college.

He was in the final months of his presidency when the train blast of 1989 occurred on campus making his last months both challenging and complicated.  However, despite this setback, he did share that his years at Carroll were the best years of his life professionally.

In his remarks at the “Meditation at the Liturgy of Thanksgiving” following the events of the blast, President Kerins shared,

“We are speaking about ‘Carroll—better than ever.’ In time, all the buildings will be repaired, the campus will be lovely again, students and faculty will continue their work in full numbers. Spring will come once more. But suppose that we were to make Carroll profoundly better than ever, with the love Christ told us to show? We could set as a goal really to try every day to be kind, to be friendly, to be helpful—to be such a place and to be such persons that the world can speak of us as the world spoke of Christ’s early followers: Behold those Carroll people; see how they love one another.”

Carroll was very fortunate to be under the care and tutelage of Dr. Kerins for those fifteen years as he was instrumental in raising the local and regional profile of Carroll College.

Our deepest condolences go out to his family.

The Carroll community has lost a true and cherished friend.

We were very fortunate to have Dr. Kerins on campus, pictured here bottom right with Dr. Evans and four former Carroll presidents–Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen, Monsignor Joseph Harrington, Dr. Thomas Trebon, and Dr. Paula McNutt–for the ceremonial groundbreaking for the Hunthausen Activity Center on September 13, 2014.

Serving up a Generous Portion

Sodexo, Carroll’s long-standing provider of dining services on campus, has given $2.5 million to the college for the Hunthausen Activity Center. Sodexo’s gift was announced at the ceremonial groundbreaking for the activity center on September 13, 2014.

"Carroll College and Sodexo have been partners for 54 years,” said President Tom Evans. “The $2.5 million contribution to the Hunthausen Activity Center is evidence of our strong relationship and our mutual desire to bring the best in service and a quality atmosphere to the deserving students, faculty and staff of Carroll College.”

Both Rick Waldt, District Manager for Sodexo and Linda Bahr, Sodexo General Manager at Carroll, share similar sentiments that their desire is first and foremost to support the wellbeing of Carroll students.

“It is my privilege and honor to be a partner with Carroll,” said Waldt. “In my 41 years in higher education service, I have never felt so integrally aligned with my clients as I do at Carroll. To be able to bring such significant support to Carroll and see it directly benefit the students is truly rewarding. They are the reason we are here, and the chief source of fulfillment for me personally in my role with Sodexo and Carroll.”

“For me, it is all about the student,” said Bahr, who has been at Carroll for the past four years. “Everything that I have done here is to strengthen the relationship between the Carroll student and Sodexo. I have always wanted them to feel that we are a partner – to nourish, to provide fun events, to educate and to advocate for them. I am in love, so to speak, with the Carroll student – all of them. Carroll recruits very fine young adults.”

We are very grateful for your gift Sodexo. We look forward to continuing our long and successful partnership.

Paying It Forward

Ray Kuntz ’77 truly values the saying “Those who have been given great gifts have an even greater responsibility.” If it weren’t for the grants and scholarships he received during his time at Carroll, Kuntz, being one of 11 kids from a large farm family, would never have had the resources to obtain his economics degree from Carroll.

Kuntz has gone on to a very successful career as CEO of Watkins & Shepard and has not forgotten the assistance he received along the way. He has returned the favor by financially supporting Carroll students so that they, too, can achieve a college education.

A student that was a beneficiary of Kuntz’s generosity was Martin Janout ’96. Janout received his degree in biology from Carroll and is now an accomplished orthopedic surgeon. In gratitude and tribute to Ray Kuntz, Janout has also adopted the “pay it forward” mentality.  Janout has established the Ray Kuntz “Pay it Forward” Scholarship.

"My brother and I were so fortunate to have the help of Ray Kuntz. Without his financial support, we may not be where we are today. By helping Katherine get through Carroll College, I hope she, too, will be successful and help future Carroll students," said Janout.

The Kuntz “Pay It Forward” Scholarship is intended to assist high-achieving students with financial need to complete their degrees. Freshman Katherine Bertolino of Roberts, Montana is studying pre-med and is the first Carroll recipient of this scholarship.

"This scholarship was my ticket to Carroll College. It allowed for me to attend a school where my passion for service and science could grow," said Bertolino. "I hope to one day pay forward the generosity that I received to help another student pursue their passion."

Thank you Ray and Martin for helping to make the dream of a Carroll education a reality!

Service Saturday

Finding ways to serve others is a fundamental element of the Carroll experience.  As a testament to this, the Hunthausen Center for Peace & Justice organizes four Service Saturdays throughout the school year. Our first Service Saturday of the semester was held on September 20.

Carroll had 56 students complete 168 hours of service volunteering at locations across Helena. Local organizations that received assistance through the outreach of our students, faculty and staff included: S.A.V.E. Recycling, God's Love, Florence Crittenton Home, Friendship Center, Eagle Manor Retirement Home, and Prickly Pear Land Trust.

Carroll’s next Service Saturday is scheduled for November 15.

A Saintly Stroll

Despite the chilly and damp conditions, Carroll’s Saints for Hope team, comprised of students, faculty, staff and a contingent of anthrozoology pups, made a strong showing at the NAMI Walk last Sunday to help de-stigmatize mental illness.

Last week was a difficult one for Carroll College…but this picture reminds us all that HOPE is alive and well.

A Fine Start for Forensics

The Carroll Talking Saints team swept to victory in one tournament and reached the semifinals of another to open the 2014-2015 forensics season.

At the Rocky Mountain College Tournament in Billings on September 12-14, Carroll first-year students swept three of the top four places in World Debate.

The freshman team of Ryan Kotek of Boise, Idaho and Jake MacDuff of Seattle, Washington won the Rocky event. Freshmen Ashlee Buller of Kalispell, Montana and Becca Poliquin of Hamilton, Montana also reached the championship round as did Tori Hill of Sidney, Montana and Luke Kendall of Stevensville, Montana.

Carroll speakers won six of the top 12 speaker awards.

At the United States Air Force Academy World Debate Tournament in Colorado Springs, September 27-28, the Carroll team of junior Ryden Meyer of Portland, Oregon and Mark Schmutzler of Helena, Montana, reached the semifinal round, narrowly missing finals. They were fifth among 56 of the nation’s top World Debate teams.

All six Carroll debaters were ranked in the top 30 speakers among 112 students at the event.

“Both these tournaments were very encouraging,” said coach Brent Northup. “The talented newcomers dominated at Rocky in a field that included senior teams from other colleges. Ryden and Mark knocked the rust off impressively in Colorado against some fine teams from Vermont,Los Angeles and Alaska. Color us hopeful as the year starts.”

Now We're in Business

The Business Department is pleased to announce that accounting students now have access to the online searchable authoritative U.S. generally accepted accounting principles along with the state and local governmental accounting and financial reporting standards.

This access was made possible by the generous support of the Mandeville Endowed Professorship in Accounting. According to the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the Financial Accounting Foundation (FAF), “understanding the Codification and how to use it is of critical importance to accounting professionals. It is also critical that accounting students learn how to use the Codification for more efficient and better understanding of authoritative accounting literature.” This understanding is critical for life-long learning and strategic decision-making as accounting students progress in their professional careers.
