A Gift of Knowledge

Long time Helena resident and enduring Carroll student, 96 year old Irene Roberts, recently delivered a gift to Carroll College president, Dr. Tom Evans, to support the Byron & Irene Roberts and Albert & Marie Nix Endowed Professorship in Math and Engineering. Joined by family, Irene expressed the importance of education in her life and what Carroll has meant to her family, "Education is the most important gift that we can provide for others. What I have given to my family in their education has been returned to me one hundred fold.  I am so proud of them, their education from Carroll, and what they have accomplished in their lives. I am truly blessed.”Irene is one of 37 senior citizens currently taking classes at Carroll College. The Helena IR wrote a story about Irene in December 2012 on her lifetime commitment to learning and her inspiring record of auditing classes at Carroll for the past twenty years. The Carroll community would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Irene and her family for this generous gift to the college.

 A Saintly Space

Students, faculty, staff, and alumni are all invited to a special event next Friday. As part of Carroll's Founder's Day weekend celebrations, we will hold a formal dedication of the Father Peoples' Lobby area in the St. Charles Hall lobby on November 1 at 5 p.m. The southeast corner of the lobby was unofficially named "Father Peoples' Lobby Office" by Father Gene himself. This is where he often sat in between classes and office hours to greet and visit with students, faculty and staff. In the years since his passing, the space remains a gathering place for connecting with our classmates and colleagues – a place to be present for one another. With the formal dedication on Friday, we will officially honor the gift Father Peoples gave us in demonstrating the importance of taking time from our busy lives to share a smile, a story, a word of encouragement, and ourselves with one another.

Please join us for the dedication at 5 p.m., following the All Saints’ Day Mass in the St. Charles Hall chapel at 4 p.m.

Wineries in Walla Walla

Carroll alumni and friends explored Walla Walla wine country October 11-14. The group of 32 included alumni ranging from the 1960s to 2012 as well as several parents and friends. Ray and Diana Goff, partners in Pepper Bridge Winery and Amavi Cellars, shared their knowledge with the participants about wine tasting and the history of wine making in the Walla Walla Valley.  Over the course of the weekend, limousines transported the group from the historic Marcus Whitman Hotel to over 10 different wineries in the area.
