HORSING AROUND FOR THE HOLIDAYS

With classes concluded and finals upon us, this was a good week to do something a little different. So, yesterday Carroll's Anthrozoology students and professors took to the saddle and crossed campus on horseback to sing carols and ring in the season.

Carroll president Tom Evans got in on the act, cozying up to one of three ponies on campus, accompanied by two Anthrozoology service dogs, who howled along as the group sang Joy to the World. Check out the full photo gallery, plus a short video clip, on the Carroll Facebook site: http://www.facebook.com/carrollcollege

Apropos of the holidays, QNs will be going on an every two-week schedule until classes start up again in January. Stay tuned for our last installment of 2012 on December 21!

Thinking ahead to year-end, anyone interested in making a special Christmas gift to Carroll College, whether to support student scholars or strengthen one of our nationally recognized academic departments, can rest assured our Advancement professionals are here to help. More info on the plethora of giving options for any dream and any budget is on the Carroll Giving website: http://www.carroll.edu/giving/givenow.cc

THE CRITICS ARE RAVING!

Last weekend’s debut of Carroll Theatre’s < strong>A Christmas Pudding drew crowds and mega kudos for a charming evening of top-shelf talent. This is your last weekend to see it—tonight through Sunday in the Carroll Theatre (Old North, St. Charles Hall). Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. tonight and Saturday, with a grand finale 1 p.m. Sunday matinee. Songs and vignettes from the works of Dickens and Shakespeare, unusual modern holiday “instant classics” and sing-alongs like Joy to the World and Carol of the Bells make this a Christmas show with something extra—nothing like you’ve ever seen before.

Admission is FREE for Carroll students and employees; otherwise general admission is $10, with students/seniors $8 (cash or checks only). Call 406-447-4304 for ticket reservations. Seating is on a first come-first served basis, and the auditorium opens 30 minutes before the show.

WRAP ARTISTS ON CAMPUS

Tomorrow (Sat., Dec. 8), Carroll’s Campus Ministry Headlights students invite the campus community and the general public to have their Christmas gifts expertly wrapped for a small fee, which will help our Headlights students embark on a May 2013 service trip to the Diocese of Helena’s mission school and clinic in Guatemala. Gift wrapping will occur in the Carroll Fortin Science Center lobby from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Gift wrap fees are $3 for a small box, $5 for a medium-sized box and $8 for a large item, and donations of $20-$35 are requested for wrapping several packages. Free gourmet coffee and cinnamon rolls will be offered for anyone having gifts wrapped (otherwise the yummy homemade pastries are $2 each). For more info, contact Campus Ministry Headlights Director Colleen Dunne at cdunne@carroll.edu.

A MARIAN CHRISTMAS

This Sunday, Dec. 9, the Carroll College Choir, Chamber Choir and Women’s Choir will present a free concert of choral music for Advent and Christmas at 4 p.m. in the Cathedral of St. Helena. The theme of the concert is “A Marian Christmas,” as many of the selections are hymns of praise to the Virgin Mary.   These include a setting of the Salve Regina text in Latin by Franz Schubert and a beautiful Hymn to the Virgin by French composer Pierre Villette.  The highlight of the concert will be a performance of Francis Poulenc’s Litanies à la Vierge Noire.  This extended piece for women’s voices and organ will feature Dale Fleck, Cathedral organist, and the Carroll College Women’s Choir.  Poulenc wrote this work in 1936, and the numerous requests for prayers in the Litany text span the emotional range from severe urgency to completely reassured peace. The concert will also feature religious and advent music by Felix Mendelssohn, Lee Kesselman, Agneta Sköld, Giuseppe Pitoni, Kinley Lange, Vijay Singh, Ron Jeffers, and Paul Manz.  The Women’s Choir will also present the holiday carol Ding, Dong!  Merrily on High! in a special arrangement by Carroll Music Professor Lynn L. Petersen. The concert will also feature student soloists Raven Dryden, Madeline Duval and Erin Johnson.

Admission to the concert is free, but a freewill offering will be taken to benefit the music fund at the Cathedral of St. Helena.  All choirs are directed by Dr. Robert Psurny Jr., associate professor of music at Carroll.  For more information on this concert, contact Dr. Psurny at 447-4807.

IT’S TIME TO SHARE WITH SHODAIR

Now until next Wednesday, Dec. 12, the Carroll College Student Nurses Association is accepting donated gifts and clothing for the children at Helena’s Shodair Children’s Hospital, Montana’s only Children’s Miracle Network hospital. Drop boxes for unwrapped gifts are located at the Christmas tree in the Fortin Science Center lobby (Scola), outside the Nursing Department office  at 415 Simperman Hall, and in the O’Connell Hall lobby. In addition to the new clothing items listed below, students are also collecting gently used clothing and books for the children and adolescents at Shodair: these items can also be left in the drop boxes. An all-new KFBB TV story on our student nurses’ annual generosity is online at: http://www.kfbb.com/news/local/Carroll-College-Nurses-Collect-Gifts-for-Shoadiar-Childrens-Hospital-181948081.html

Unwrapped items being sought include: art supplies (no scissors), puzzles and board games, trading cards, Lego or other building toys, Beanie Babies, My Little Pony, Pillow Pets, Nerf balls, action figures/Transformers, Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars, hand-held games, DVDs (G and PG movies, nature and science films), hats and gloves for boys and girls ages 5-17, pajamas, slippers and socks for boys and girls ages 5-17, shirts, jeans or sweatpants for boys and girls ages 5-17, personal care items like scented lotions, combs and brushes, fleece blankets and gift cards so nurses can shop especially for each child. (Please, no sharp or breakable items, including ceramic or glass ornaments, and no items like Easy Bake Ovens).

GET THE GOPHERS!

A news flash from the Carroll College Engineers Without Borders Holiday Corporate Matching Campaign: so far, our generous EWB supporters have pushed the Carroll chapter to 3 times its original fundraising goal, for a total of $8,690 raised. The campaign does not end until January 15, 2013 (though the corporate match has been maxxed out), and Carroll now ranks #2 in number of donations, right behind the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers EWB chapter. The chapter that receives the most donations gets an added $5,000 award, which Carroll EWB would use to build clean water, farming and construction projects in poor areas of Mexico and Guatemala. It’s a close race: the Saints have received 73 donations, while the Gophers have 80. You can help us bury the Gophers: To make a donation, go to https://ssl.charityweb.net/ewbusa/pfp/carrollcollegeofmontana.htm. And to follow the campaign, check out: http://ewb-usa.org/2012giving.

WE GOT CARDED

Carroll’s Holiday Mail for Heroes effort was a blazing success, meeting the project’s goal of producing 552 Christmas cards signed with personalized notes to be sent to American service members stationed overseas and convalescing from injuries. In all, three schools, including Carroll, participated, and the bulk of the cards came from the staff and clients at Helena Industries (they pitched in 102 signed greeting cards). Our holiday greetings have been mailed out by Carroll’s Veteran Services Coordinator Brandy Keely and Tina Wagner in Financial Aid, both of whom provide invaluable services to Carroll’s veteran student community.

Timothy Joseph "Bert" Kennedy, class of 1971, died on Nov. 28, 2012. After Carroll, he earned his master’s in the classics at the University of Oregon.
