August 5, 2011 QuickNotes

SPOTLIGHT ON THE GROTTO Thanks to the financial support of a donor, the statue of the Madonna in the Grotto of the Blessed Virgin Mary facing Guadalupe Hall is now illuminated at night by a spotlight. Mary hovers on the rocks high above the upper right of the altar, and now she shines luminously against the darkness. The college extends a special thanks to Fr. Marc Lenneman, our college chaplain and director of Campus Ministry, for his work with the donor on this important and very symbolic campus improvement. A story on the Grotto, written by Carroll Professor Emeritus Hank Burgess, was published in the summer 2008 edition of Carroll Magazine (the one with Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen on the cover), which outlines the fascinating history of this iconic Carroll place of worship and reflection. AND SPEAKING OF MAGAZINES . . . The summer 2011 edition of Carroll Magazine is at the printer now, meaning readers will be soon receiving a hardcopy paper edition of this splendid publication. We won't give anything away, but this mag packs plenty of punch. For those who don't receive the magazine by mail, the whole thing will be available online for your enjoyment and emailing pleasure. Updates on the online magazine's splash on the Carroll website will be included in the next mailing of QNs two weeks from now. ALUMNI NEWS In the News The Rev. Jim "Hazy" Hazelton, class of 1949, who has served the Diocese of Helena's mission in Guatemala for 47 years, has announced his retirement this fall, when he will return to Montana. Fr. Kevin Christofferson, formerly the pastor of St. John the Baptist Parish in Frenchtown, Mont., will take over as the Guatemala mission's pastor. Hazy celebrated 50 years in the priesthood on May 27, 2011, capping off a sterling service career, which included the 1996 opening of the mission's La Asunción school, which now educates 500 junior and senior high students annually. Hazy Day, the annual mission fundraiser benefitting the school, will take place at the Cathedral of St. Helena on September 11, 2011, hosted by Hazy himself. Hazy Day features Guatemalan handcrafts and other items, with all sale proceeds and donations going toward tuition sponsorship for the mission students. (Hazy at the mission in photo above right and, at left, kneeling in the Cathedral of St. Helena at his 1964 blessing before embarking for Guatemala as a young priest) Jim Olson (photo right, standing center behind bike), class of 1963, is repeating his triumph of last summer by embarking on another two-day 200-mile legacy charity bike ride on August 22-23 on Idaho's Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes. During last year's ride, he raised $11,000 to benefit his favorite charity, L'Arche Spokane Community, which provides a loving environment for the developmentally disabled. Jim hopes to beat his fundraising of last summer and help the great people of L'Arche Spokane's Trinity House. Jim also recently received the Flame of Life Award from the PED (Prevention, Education and Development for Creative Aging) organization in Spokane for his lifetime of volunteer service. "I am richly blessed and credit much of my good fortune to my great Carroll College days," Jim says. To help Jim meet his fundraising goal during this summer's 200-mile bike trek, email Jim (the L'Arche Spokane fundraising chair) with your donation directly at imjimo@aol.com, or donate via the L'Arche Spokane website: http://www.larcheofspokane.org/upcomingevents.html Sara Farr, class of 2007, has been hired as the seventh grade teacher at St. Andrew School in Helena. Check the website for full info here: http://www.carroll.edu/presidentialsearch/index.cc Dr. Gillian Glaes (photo left), who participated in a Fulbright German Studies Seminar this June in Berlin, Germany, and Brussels, Belgium, reports some of the high points of her adventure, including a visit to the STASI archives in Berlin. "This was part of our quest to understand German (re)unification and its affect on German national identity in relation to the question of immigration and ethnic diversity in Germany, which were the central topics of the seminar," Dr. Glaes explains. "While we were taking our tour, we met an Egyptian activist who was visiting the STASI archives in Berlin to learn what they did with secret files kept by the STASI (the East German secret police) after the fall of the Berlin Wall in November of 1989. One of my colleagues said to her in English ‘Congratulations on the revolution,' to which she responded (in English) ‘Thank you for staying out of it.' It was quite a moment for all of us, American, German, and Egyptian alike."  In fact, it made such an impression on all of those present that there is now an article (in German) about the encounter at: http://www.bstu.bund.de/DE/BundesbeauftragteUndBehoerde/Aktuelles/11-06-20_aegypt-aktivist_fulbright.html?nn=1704304 Carroll's food service provider Sodexo has announced the hiring of a new executive chef, Chris Taggart.
