This symposium, hosted by MerlinCCC in Helena, will be facilitated by Julianna Breit, class of '23, this year's Merlin Student Scholar Fellow. The symposium will be held in the evening on Wednesday, April 19th at The Helena Avenue Theater and feature guests panelists Krys Holmes, Tim Holmes & Ashby Kinch . In addition to guest speakers and interwoven performance, the symposium will include ample time for Q & A with our guest scholars, facilitated by Julianna. More information available here.

Philosophy Now Lecture, 2023
On Thursday, March 30, 2023, Stony Brook University Associate Professor of Philosophy Anne O'Byrne, Ph.D., presented the Carroll College Philosophy Now Lecture, "Kinship, Citizenship: 23andMe and the End of Democratic Life." Dr. O'Byrne spoke about threats to community in a democracy. She teaches in the Philosophy Department at Stony Brook University. More information here.
Human/Nature: Unstable Environments & Global Responsibilities
Join us October 29, 2022, 7 p.m. in the Simperman Hall Wiegand Amphitheatre for the public lecture Human/Nature: .Unstable Environments & Global Responsibilities. Speakers for this event are: Ari-Elmeri Hyvönen, currently a Fulbright Finland Senior Visiting Scholar at Cornell University, and Maria Robaszkiewicz, a visiting professor at the Centre for Studies of Theory and Criticism and a Visiting Fellow at King’s College, Western University, London ON, Canada. Dr. Robaszkiewicz will speak on "How to think with and against Hannah Arendt about the political crises we face today." Dr. Hyvönen will speak on "Democracy, Scientific Expertise, and Climate Change.” The lecture will be followed by discussion, open to Carroll community and the general public.

- Senior Philosophy major, Greyson Gray, won the Carroll College 2022 literary festival’s First Place Collegiate Prize, with his essay “Wisdom of Wizards." Greyson presented his paper at the 2022 festival on November 17.
- Senior Ethics and Values Studies Minor Bray Holmes was one of the 2022 winners of Saints Against Racism Book Giveway. Bray submitted a paper entitled Racism within Starbucks, which she wrote in her Business Ethics class. Congratulations Bray!
- Philosophers at SURF 2022. Philosophy minor Claire Montowski presented her paper, "A Virtue Ethics Argument for Music Education," in a poster session at SURF 2022. Senior major Megan Radosevich presented her senior paper, "Why Our Education is "Not for School but for Life"" during the live sessions. Great job Claire and Megan!
- Julianna Breit, philosophy major, and 2021-2022 Merlin Student Scholar Fellow, led a workshop this spring on grief. This workshop was the result of her year as 2021-2022 Merlin Student Scholar Fellow, and she explored frameworks for acknowledging and understanding grief’s role in our lives. The workshop took place in the Conference Center in Reeder’s Alley on April 30th.
- Dr. Elvira Roncalli has recently edited two books of essays. Contemporary Italian Women Philosophers: Stretching the Art of Thinking, was published in September, 2021. It is a unique portrayal of the theoretical positions of eleven Italian women thinkers who share the practice of philosophy and extend philosophical work and interests beyond the realm of the discipline strictly defined. Dr. Roncalli's second book, The Future of the World Is Open: Encounters With Lea Melandri, Luisa Muraro, Adriana Cavarero, and Rossana Rossanda, examines the work and thought of three prominent Italian feminist philosophers, Lea Melandri, Luisa Muraro, and Adriana Cavarero, as it delves into the significant experiences that shaped them, highlighting their converging and diverging positions. This book will be published in July, 2022. Congratulations Dr. Roncalli!
- Junior Philosophy and History major Greyson Gold, '23 recently published an essay entitled "The Wisdom of Wizards: The Cognitive Value of Fantasy Literature," in the 2022 volume of Stance. Stance is an undergraduate philosophy journal that solicits original contributions to the field. Highly competitive and international in scope, Stance's annual acceptance rate is between 6-10%. Greyson's is the second Stance essay from a Carroll student in the past four volumes.

- Dr. Barry Ferst has a couple of articles posted now on the Classical Wisdom site. One reconstructs the "Gospel of Bacchus," displayed in the various sarcophagi Dr. Ferst has personally photographed. From Roman Sarcophagi comes the Gospel of Bacchus. The other article recounts his 10 years of travels photographing and studying ancient sarcophogi. Searching for Sarcophagi.
- John Cooney, '20, and a philosophy major, had a paper published in the journal Stance. "Freeing Mysticism: Epistemic Standards in Theory and Practice," is available on the web. This journal has a rejection rate of 92%, so congratulations John! John also presented this paper at the National Undergraduate Theology Research Conference, hosted by Creighton University in April, 2019. John is pictured at the conference with Dr. Glowienka, who advised him on the paper during the summer of 2018.
