About
Degree: B.A. Civil Engineering from Carroll College - 2009; M.S. Civil Engineering from Washington State University
Current Work: Project Engineer at Latitude 33 Planning and Engineering (Land Development) San Diego, CA
Previous Work: Design Engineer at Shoener Environmental, San Diego, CA
Brief description of responsibilities:
I lead land development projects, most of which are urban infill and urban redevelopment. I coordinate the civil design with other members of multi-disciplinary teams: architects, structural, fire, plumbing, and electrical engineers, landscape architects, and contractors. Our civil tasks include items such as wet utility design, earthwork calculations, precise grading, as well as generating reports for utility capacities, water quality, and hydrology. Our projects are diverse and vary from upscale shopping malls to low income housing in downtown San Diego.
I also help lead our GIS team where we focus on mapping underground utilities and creating interactive GIS maps for facility management departments at Universities for use in design, maintenance, and asset management.
Briefly describe one of your more interesting projects or assignments to date:
I enjoy working on projects with a greater community purpose. Last year I worked on the site plan for a 6 building graduate student housing complex at UC San Diego. The University is very forward thinking and allowed us to design and implement a new water quality treatment method that has not yet been accepted by the City of San Diego. Recently I attended the opening ceremony and enjoyed seeing the students use the very items we spent all year designing; bike paths, grassy knolls, pool area, bocce courts, splash pads and patios!
Briefly describe a notable memory from your days at Carroll:
I enjoyed all my years at Carroll, especially competing in concrete canoe (‘07, ‘08, & ‘09) but I will never forget race day in the spring of ‘08. Our canoe had been taking on water for most of the day, but by late afternoon the canoe had completely broke into two pieces in the middle of the lake. The whole team put their wet suits back on and jumped into the frigid water and helped the 4 stranded members haul the canoe back to shore. Even after watching our entire spring’s work literally sink, the team was still laughing, joking, and making the situation into a lifelong memorable day.
A piece of advice for prospective Carroll engineering students:
Summer internships are invaluable, but make sure you study abroad also! After graduation make sure to take and pass your FE & PE as soon as possible! Lastly, make sure to get involved with extracurricular activities like ASCE and EWB during and after college. The connections you make in these clubs can open many doors!
