Biography

Dr. Restrepo-Mesa earned his PhD in Hispanic Literatures and Cultures from The Catholic University of America where, under the direction of Dr. Mario Ortiz, he wrote his dissertation on the political potential of the representation of music in Latin American literature of the 20th century. He also earned his BA in Music/Classical Guitar from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana de Bogotá, and, thanks to a grant from the Government of Japan, he studied Japanese contemporary music at the Tokyo University of the Arts. After finishing his studies in Japan, Dr. Restrepo-Mesa moved to Spain where he earned his Graduate Diploma in Classical Guitar from the Real Conservatorio Superior de la Comunidad de Madrid and his Diploma of Advanced Studies in Musicology from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid.

Research and Teaching Interests

Dr. Restrepo-Mesa’s current research interests include the political potential of Hispanic art and its contemporary representations in literature, cinema, music, and fine arts as political narratives and counternarratives. He is also interested in the representation of the human and social aspects of health in Hispanic cultural production as an aid to the sociology of medicine.

At the Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin Program in Hispanic Studies and Languages, Dr. Restrepo-Mesa offers a range of courses, from introductory and intermediate Spanish language and Hispanic culture courses to advanced grammar, composition, and conversation courses where his students develop the cultural tools to elaborate complex arguments about Hispanic culture and art.

Dr. Restrepo-Mesa is the Director of the Spanish for Health Professions Program, home of the Minor in Spanish for Health Professions. He also teaches in-depth advanced courses based on his research interests, such as “Post-Global Financial Crisis Latin American Cinema,” and “Cultivating Compassion: A Hispanic Approach to Human-Centered Health Professions.”
