Dr. Michael Gray performs nationally as a tenor soloist, premiering new operas and musicals, while also sustaining the legacies of traditional favorites. Some of his most notable performances have taken place with companies such as: Opera Montana, Helena Symphony, Opera Omaha, Charlottesville Opera, Florence Symphony Orchestra, Teatro Lirico d'Europa, Opera Southwest, Glens Falls Symphony, South Carolina Bach Society, Palmetto Opera, Piccolo Spoleto Festival, Opera Carolina, and The Italian Embassy in Washington D.C.
Throughout his career, Dr. Gray has also made many radio appearances. Most distinctly, his performance as The Sailor in Dido and Aeneas was highlighted in full on NPR Richmond as part of Capitol Opera Richmond’s production of the opera. He also worked as a voice actor for WNTW 92.7’s series revival of Our Miss Brooks during the quarantine of 2019 and 2020. As a service member, Dr. Gray performs with the 204th Army Band stationed in Vancouver, Washington. The ensemble regularly performs the genres of commercial and ceremonial music across the Pacific Northwest, Midwest, Alaska, and Hawaii.
In academia, Dr. Gray has made several guest appearances with collegiate choirs and orchestras. He has appeared with the University of South Carolina choirs, Elizabeth City State University choir and orchestra, and as Rinuccio in Christopher Newport University’s production of Gianni Schicchi. Additionally, Dr. Gray has guest conducted the University of South Carolina Gospel Choir and served as a graduate instructor of Class Voice and Applied Voice at the university.
