About

Mark Johnson, ’98, graduated from Carroll College with a degree in History for Secondary Education and taught for 8 years at Concordia International School in Shanghai, China. As a social studies teacher, he utilized his Montana roots and the “habits-of-mind” which he learned at Carroll College to develop an inquiry based approach to teaching, helping students develop skills of critical thinking, problem solving, analysis and interpretation while using research methodology to seek answers to historical events. He led his students in researching events and history of Chinese in Montana.

Mr. Johnson’s work was recognized by the National Council for Social Studies and by HISTORY™ (formerly the History Channel) for his unique teaching methods of using a transnational project combining history, language and crossing generations. He has also presented at educator conferences throughout the U.S., Philippines, Malaysia, China and Korea.

On November 3, 2016, Mr. Johnson delivered the Carroll College Founder's Day Lecture entitled entitled, Becoming Chinese in Montana: Political Activism amongst Montana’s Historic Chinese Communities. He was also the 2016 Alumni Academic Achievement Awardee.

Mr. Johnson currently serves as Faculty of Supervision and Instruction for the ACE Program (Alliance for Catholic Education) for University of Notre Dame.
