About

Dr. Joyce Stewart ’79, has served as a Carroll trustee since 2018.

Dr. Joyce Stewart, a 1979 Carroll graduate, spent 40 years as a teacher, elementary principal, middle school principal, associate superintendent, and deputy superintendent. As principal, her staff and students received numerous Washington State academic achievement awards. As deputy superintendent, she was responsible for the teaching and learning in 26 schools in Everett School District, in Everett, Washington. In 2017, she was the recipient of the Robert J. Handy WA State Most Effective Administrator Award from a large district. As deputy superintendent, Joyce spent most of her time in schools with students, teachers, and principals, and supporting unsheltered families. She saw firsthand how teachers and principals influence lives when focused on each student’s human dignity – and upon making school the best part of each student’s day.

After she retired in 2019, she authored the book, The Principal Who Made School the Best Part of Each Student’s Day. The book is used to mentor principals and assistant principals. In 2021, Joyce served as co-chair for the Ending Student Homelessness Task Force for the City of Everett Mayor.

I was fortunate to be involved in many leadership opportunities and service projects when I attended Carroll. Through these opportunities I witnessed how a small group of thoughtful, committed individuals can change the world. As a result, I continue to give back by serving on Carroll College’s Board and other volunteer Boards.
