Department Chair of Communication

Though nothing can bring back the hour of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower; we will grieve not, rather find strength in what remains behind -William WordsworthBio: Brent Northup came to Carroll College in 1989. Before coming to Carroll, Brent taught 8th grade English and coached debate at Kinkaid School in Houston, Texas. He then spent 10 years working at a daily newspaper in Bellevue, Washington as an arts editor, feature writer, and film critic. Since coming to Carroll, Brent has received the Carroll College Distinguished Educator Award for outstanding teaching. In addition to teaching and advising students, he coaches the Talking Saints Forensics team who have won or shared 25 regional championships and won a national championship in parliamentary debate. His hobbies include writing weekly film reviews for the Helena Independent Record and playing in duplicate bridge tournaments in the summertime. He also serves as department chair.Research Interests: Communication Ethics, Servant Leadership, and Rhetorical Power of Silence
