Friends, colleagues, family and grateful students gathered Monday night to honor three beloved Carroll staff members in the Scola.
Cindy Moore, custodian of Guad Hall, Allison Sever, director of mail services, and Clare O’Malley, head of catering for dining services, were all selected for recognition for exceptional customer service by the Servant Leadership class, a communication course taught this fall by Brent Northup.
Community member and Carroll supporter Brett Wiensch, owner of 1889 Coffee House, was also honored for exemplary servant leadership. Wiensch was out of town, and unable to attend.
“The class studies both servant leadership and customer service,” said Northup. “The students end their semester by celebrating outstanding customer servants and servant leaders on campus and in the community.”
Northup says the fact students are honoring the staff who serves them makes the ceremony special.
“Our Carroll staff works hard for too little recognition, so this was an opportunity to give them a public thank you,” said Northup. “No better time than Christmas to celebrate the gifts our staff gives to all of us. The fact that these honorees were chosen by students who love them made this a touching evening of celebration. Brett is a community member who supports the college in many ways, and hires our students, so he’s family, too.”
Senior Roisin O’Neill, a political science major from Lake Oswego, Oregon, and Johnny Day of Billings, who is majoring in Communication Studies and Catholic Studies, served as emcees. They were assisted by members of the class, who presented the awards.
The honorees received certificates and copies of letters of appreciation, written by the students.
“The class worked hard to ensure that Clare, Allison, Cindy and Brett were honored in a heartfelt, genuine way.” said Northup. “They held a Sunday dress rehearsal, decorated the Scola elegantly, and wore their Sunday best to make the evening memorable for them. It was a lovely evening that ended with students hugging the staff they love.”
