Sam Conner – University of Utah's Same Day Surgery Center

Sam Conner, a senior at Carroll majoring in Psychology with a pre-med focus, recently completed an impactful internship at the University of Utah's Same Day Surgery Center. Working as a Health Care Assistant (HCA), Sam actively participated in patient preparation for surgery—taking vitals, assisting with pre-op needs, and ensuring patients were comfortable and well-cared for post-surgery. His role involved supporting surrounding nurses and responding to patient needs, giving him hands-on experience that aligns closely with his aspiration to become a surgeon.

Reflecting on the experience, Sam shared that Carroll provided him with essential tools he successfully applied throughout his internship, including strong communication skills, a capacity for caring for others, and educational insights that enriched his daily tasks.

“I would recommend that all students at Carroll take part in an internship that they closely relate to or is something that they enjoy. Internships allow for students to take a deeper dive into their fields of interest and push for a further utilization of their skills within the real world. I loved every aspect of my internship experience this summer, and was able to take away many skills and lessons that I use throughout my life today.”
