Remembering Professor Emeritus Joe Munzenrider

Dear Carroll Community,

We are saddened to share that Professor Emeritus Joe Munzenrider passed away this past Sunday, October 19, 2025.

Joe joined Carroll in 1965 and taught music for 42 years, retiring in 2007. During his time here, he directed the College Choir and Carrolleers vocal ensemble, leading performances in Helena and across Montana, including collaborations with the Spokane Symphony.

A gifted musician and teacher, prior to his retirement, Joe performed more than 200 times on organ, harpsichord, and carillon, and inspired countless students through his music and art appreciation classes to explore and engage with the arts throughout their lives. He also served for many years as the organist at the Cathedral of St. Helena.

Joe also contributed to the college in innovative ways including teaching in the Integrated Humanities Program as well as developing early computer programs for faculty use. In addition, in true liberal arts tradition, he was always seeking new ways to connect learning across disciplines.

The funeral Mass for Joe will be held at the Cathedral of St. Helena on Wednesday, November 12, at noon. Cards may be sent to his sister:

Claire Munzenrider and family

20 S. Benton Ave Helena, MT 59601

We are grateful for Joe’s many contributions to Carroll and the lasting impact he made on our community. Please keep his family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers during this time.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Glowienka, Ph.D.

Bishop Austin A. Vetter, D.D.
