October 29, 2020 Insider: Fall Focus

 

The eight newest members of the Carroll College Talking Saints entered two novice tournaments, reserved for first year students, and all eight Carroll students won awards, including top speaker. All four teams advanced to championship rounds at least once, and they added six top-10 speaker awards – with three more Saints coming in at 11th.

“Some of these newcomers started from zero, with no prior experience and to see them already starting to excel was so encouraging,” said coach Brent Northup. “But they are also quite competitive and I think they may have classified their results as a B+, and that’s a grade that truly annoys A students. Their journey is just beginning. Color me optimistic." Read more.

While Carroll College’s first-year students were at virtual novice events, the upperclass teams headed virtually up to Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York, on October 3-4, for what organizers called “make-up Nationals,” a huge event designed to soften the canceling of nationals last spring. More than 220 teams entered.

Talking Saint senior Josh Mansfield of Pocatello, Idaho, and his partner sophomore Hellie Badaruddin of Missoula, finished tied for the 32nd and final spot to advance to the championship octa-final rounds, but narrowly lost out on speaker points.

“That was a fine showing in a deep field that had the best teams in the country present – Harvard, Stanford, John Hopkins, Berkeley, Amherst, Princeton and the rest,” said coach Brent Northup. “Josh and Hellie are just getting in synch, and improving every week. When virtual spring Nationals comes around in April, they will be primed and eager and very ready, I’m sure.”

Carroll assistant coach Becca Poliquin ‘18 was chosen as one of the elite final round judges, a significant honor.The tournament was virtual, as are all debate tournaments this COVID season. Read more.

 

In July, we shared the story of three Montana friends, including Carroll senior Harry Green, who were teaming up for a 45-day, 500-mile pack trip through Montana’s wilderness in an effort to raise funds for cancer research.
 
Thirty-six days and $30,000 later, they completed their trip. "It was such an awesome, rewarding experience," said Harry Green. Fourteen Carroll College Fighting Saints men’s soccer players and thirteen women's soccer players were honored as academic all-conference by the Cascade Collegiate Conference. 
 
To be selected, an athlete must hold a minimum cumulative GPA at time of nomination of 3.20 on a 4.00 scale using only credits from the institution submitting the nomination. A student-athlete must have been identified with the institution for two full semesters or three full quarters and have sophomore standing.
 
On the men’s team: Kaden Connor, Benjamin Dagg, Melle De Reuver, Robin Erickson, Damian Fraga, Leo Georgiades, Paolo Georgiades, Greyson Gold, Keegan Lyons, Jordan Martin, Dade McDevitt, Javier Rodriguez, Pablo Salamanca and Birgir Stefansson were named to the team.  

On the women’s team: Katie Anderson, Ashley Carter, Kody Clements, Sarah Conway, Montera Espinosa, Sydney Green, Tillynn McGreevey, McKenna Payne, Josie Snyder, Blair Stapleton, Ellie Stevens, Brynn Walker and Amaya Winkler were selected as academic all-conference.

Back in February 2020, we shared a story that ran in the Billings Gazette regarding former Carroll College Athletic Director Bruce Parker’s battle with kidney disease.
