Presidential Portrait

Visitors to the Corette Library on the Carroll campus will now find a silkscreen portrait of President John F. Kennedy gracing the interior of the library. This distinguished silkscreen was given to Bill (’54) and Gail (‘66) Lannan as a gift from Fr. Daniel Peter Hillen and is on loan to Carroll from the Lannans. Gail and Bill wanted to share it with the college on this, the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy's death.

Bill and Gail Lannen are longtime friends of Carroll College. Bill started Carroll's 3-2 engineering program and after a long career with the Guaranteed Student Loan Program, came back to Carroll to reestablish Carroll's golf program, serving as coach until his retirement. Gail worked for the diocese of Helena. They always have Carroll in their heart and their prayers and have been extremely generous of their time, talent and support, as many Carroll students can attest.

In remembrance of November 22, 1963, Jim Michelotti (’66) shares his recollections with the Montana Standard of the reaction on the Carroll campus to the shocking news that President Kennedy had been shot.  Click here to read his story.

National Nomination for Blomquist

Congratulations to Carroll College junior linebacker Sean Blomquist for being nominated for the inaugural Cliff Harris Small College Defensive Player of the Year Award.

Sean, a Helena native, has started all three years at Carroll and was a 2012 First-Team All-Frontier Conference selection last season leading the Fighting Saints in tackles.

“Sean’s achievements this season have been tremendous.  His play at linebacker has been incredible and his leadership on defense has been invaluable – he is one of the top defensive players in the country and is very deserving of this recognition,” Saints head coach Mike Van Diest said.

The Cliff Harris Award will be presented annually to the top small college defensive football player in the country representing almost 500 NCAA Division II, III and NAIA colleges and universities.

An Eye-Opening Evening

One hundred and ninety eight students participated in Carroll’s inaugural Oxfam Hunger Banquet in the STAC last Monday.  “I appreciated that students were willing to participate in the event, even if they didn't fully understand what was going on,” said student organizer senior Logan McLean. “Providing an opportunity for students to reflect on their position at Carroll and potential to make a difference just by eating differently made the event completely worth it, especially as we are entering into the holiday season” said McLean.

The event received front page coverage in the Helena IR.

Thank you to all that were willing to step out of their routine for an evening to bring awareness to poverty, hunger and injustice issues.

Helping this Holiday Season

A number of Carroll-sponsored collections occur during the holiday season.  Consider helping those in need by supporting these various causes on campus.

Help to be part of the solution by contributing to the rehabilitative process for inmates by donating books. SO 200 - Social Problems is organizing a book drive for the Montana State Prison libraries. The libraries are valuable to the prison and prisoners in many ways.  Carroll’s donations last year were greatly appreciated. There are collection boxes in all major office and dorm buildings on campus from Nov. 20 through Dec. 4.

Keep the little ones warm. The Honor Scholars Program annually collects winter clothing for school-aged children for the Head Start Program.  There is a need for sizes 3T-6T.  Items needed include: winter coats, snow pants, hats, mittens, scarves, etc. A collection bin is located in the St. Charles East Lobby. Collections will be delivered to Head Start on December 12.
