Heavenly Music

The Carroll College Choirs will perform their fall concert “In Praise of Music” on Sunday, November 24 at 4 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Helena. The performance includes 35 students who comprise the Carroll College Choir and Chamber Choir

“In Praise of Music” features several diverse selections which comment on the beauty, spirituality, and power of music.  Dr. Robert Psurny, Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choirs at Carroll, chose to highlight the choral works of Benjamin Britten in honor of his Centenary.  Britten was born in 1913 and 2013 has been a global celebration of his music.

The featured work in the concert will be Britten’s “A Ceremony of Carols.” The work will feature several student soloists, and will highlight the virtuosity of guest harpist Angela Espinosa, who is the Principal Harpist with the Bozeman Symphony.   Another featured piece in the concert is “Hymn for St. Cecilia” by English composer Herbert Howells, and will feature guest organist Dale Fleck, from the Cathedral of St. Helena.  For further information on the various works featured in the concert, click here

The public is welcome and admission is free.

Hungry to Make a Difference

The Hunthausen Center for Peace and Justice and Sodexo are sponsoring an Oxfam Hunger Banquet on Monday, November 18 at 5 p.m. at the St. Thomas Aquinas Commons (STAC) to bring awareness to poverty, hunger and injustice issues. At this interactive event, the place where you sit, and the meal that you eat, are determined by the luck of the draw—just as in real life some of us are born into relative prosperity and others into poverty.

Students and others that choose to dine at the STAC on Monday will draw tickets that will randomly assign them to a high-, middle-, or low-income tier.  Each income level receives a corresponding meal – filling and nutritious or sparse and simple.

Many participants will leave the evening with a hunger in their belly but also, more importantly, a hunger and motivation to help make a difference and work to find solutions to reduce hunger and poverty in the world.  The event will be lead by Emily Dean, ASCC president.  Throughout the evening, stories will be shared about people from each income level to give context to the poverty.

In conjunction with this event, donations will be collected for the YWCA Placer Pantry to help those closest to home dealing with these issues on a day-to-day basis.    The Placer Pantry provides basic toiletries to anyone in the community in need. If you would like to make a contribution to the pantry, either bring your donation (e.g., toilet paper, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, feminine hygiene products) to the Hunger Banquet or to the Hunthausen Center (122 Borromeo Hall) during the day on Monday, Nov. 18. For questions about the banquet, contact Logan McLean at lmclean@carroll.edu.

Fast and Furious and In the Top 50

Carroll cross country and track and field coach David Morris was recently ranked 33rd on the Big Sky’s list of 50 Greatest Male Athletes.

It is not hard to understand why when you see his impressive resume of wins.  He ran for the University of Montana and from 1989-93, he was an eight-time Big Sky Champion.  He won the 1994 NCAA indoor title in the 3,000 meters and was the second Big Sky athlete to win the 1,500 meters, 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters at the conference outdoor championship.   In addition, he still holds Montana’s track record in the 1,500-meters (3:44) and the Big Sky meet record in the 10,000-meters (29:11.17).

“That is an incredible honor,” said Morris. “There are so many great athletes that have competed in the Big Sky Conference that it’s hard to believe I deserve it. To be included with the best men ever to compete in the Big Sky Conference is amazing. It’s probably the highest honor I’ve received.”
