The Sacred & the Secular

                     John Reimringer

The annual Carroll Literary Festival, themed "The Sacred and the Secular," will be taking place on campus next Thursday and Friday, November 14-15. 

Thursday will feature a Q & A with author John Reimringer, plus daytime readings and presentations by Carroll faculty and students, capped off by an evening keynote presentation by John Reimringer, reading from his debut novel, Vestments.

Friday will feature additional faculty and student readings in the afternoon with a faculty panel discussion at 4 p.m. and a selection of short readings with faculty and students to conclude the festival.

Thursday, November 14

12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.: Student Q & A with John Reimringer, author of Vestments, lower level of the Campus Center.

2 p.m. - 3:20 p.m.: Concurrent Sessions: Creative prose, poetry, and academic essays, lower level of the Campus Center.

7:30 p.m. - 9 p.m.: Keynote reading and book signing with John Reimringer, author of Vestments, named one of the "Best Books of 2010" by Publishers Weekly and winner of the 2011 Minnesota Book Award for Novel and Short Story, among other honors.  The reading will be held in Trinity Hall Lounge and is free and open to the public.

Friday, November 15

1 p.m. - 3:50 p.m.: Concurrent Sessions: Creative prose, poetry, and academic essays, lower level of the Campus Center. Two sessions are scheduled throughout the afternoon, lasting one hour and twenty minutes each.

4 p.m. - 5:15 p.m.: Faculty panel discussion - The Sacred & the Secular in John Reimringer’s Vestments - with Carroll professors Dr. John Reis (Theology), Kevin Stewart (English) and Fr. Marc Lenneman, Director of Campus Ministry, lower level of the Campus Center.

5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.: Short Readings, with faculty and students, lower level of the Campus Center.

International Flair

Carroll is currently home to 26 international students representing 17 different countries from places as diverse as Malaysia and Tibet to Australia and Brazil.  To celebrate these students and their native culture as well as provide the opportunity for Carroll students to explore study abroad options, Carroll is hosting International Week, November 11-14.

A wide variety of activities are planned with the OASIS International Dinner being one of the highlights of the week.  The Monday dinner will include a variety of international food selections from Torrijas from Spain to Shrimp Momos from Tibet.  In addition, the week will include cultural presentations and panel discussions, an International fair, a Uganda Market, and gift and clothing sales. Big Band Salute

The Carroll College Jazz Combo will present its Fall concert, “Big Band Salute,” in the Carroll Theatre on Thursday, November 14 at 7:30 p.m.  Come and enjoy the big band sound of their 18-piece jazz ensemble.  

Carroll students led by Dr. Lynn Petersen will perform Don Menza’s Groovin’ Hard, Joe Garland’s Leap Frog, Brian Setzer’s Rock This Town, and Henry Mancini’s rockin’ theme from the TV series “Peter Gunn.”  The group will add a vocalist on Yesterdays, All the Things You Are, When I Fall In Love, and a Michael Bublé inspired arrangement of Feeling Good.  Smaller combos will perform Cole Porter’s Night and Day, It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing), and a Dixieland rendition of American Patrol. The concert will also feature the premiere of Green Apples, an original jazz chart composed by director Lynn Petersen.  Admission is free and open to the public.  Call 447-4303 for more information.

An Officer & A Gentleman

Former Talking Saint and 1991 graduate, Dr. John Burk, was recently promoted to Brigadier General of the Arizona National Guard. After his time at Carroll College, John earned a doctorate and master's degree from Southern Illinois University in addition to a master's degree from the U.S. Army War College. Dr. Burk has served in the Arizona National Guard for over 27 years.

Marathon Man

 

 

Former Carroll football player AJ Porrini (’06) ran in his first marathon on Sunday, November 3, 2013 in New York City. Since moving to NYC in August 2011, he set his sights on running this race. Along the way AJ raised contributions for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, allowing him to qualify. Last year Hurricane Sandy set his plans back but not his goal to finish what he had promised to all his sponsors and friends.

Out of over 50,000 runners, AJ finished 3,003 in a time of 3:21.46. The Carroll College flag was proudly waved along the marathon route. A sight AJ, and all spectators and runners, could see for blocks.

 

Katie Wood (‘13) and Cole Whitmoyer (‘10) were married at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Laurel. Katie graduated from Laurel High and from Carroll College in Helena, majoring in nursing. She works for the Gallatin Valley Maxillofacial & Aesthetic Surgery. Cole graduated from Helena High and from Carroll College also with a major in nursing. He is now obtaining his DNP-Family Nurse Practitioner at Montana State University-Bozeman. 

Anna Curtin, class of 2012 and former Carroll soccer player, has been accepted to the Creighton University School of Medicine. Over the past year, Anna has been participating in international community service having recently returned from spending six months working at a hospital in rural Uganda. While there, Anna, in collaboration with the orthopedic officer and a fellow volunteer, started a clubfoot clinic at Nyakibale Hospital where she was volunteering.To learn more about the initiative, visit http://www.razoo.com/br/causes/Clubfoot-Initiative-Karoli-Lwanga.

Jill Nowacki (’01) is the new president/CEO of the Credit Union League of Connecticut.  Nowacki first worked for credit unions in communications and marketing at the Montana Credit Union Network.  Her next position was in Washington, D.C. working for the Credit Union National Association as executive director of Credit Union House. She then went to at Maps CU in Salem, Ore. where she was executive director of Maps Community Foundation.

Scott Boutilier (’09) has recently been promoted to commercial loan officer at American Federal Savings Bank. Boutilier has over seven years’ banking experience working in operations, IT and lending departments. Boutilier holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration with concentrations in finance and marketing from Carroll College.

 In Memoriam

Patricia E. Wellman (’55), of Circleville, Ohio, died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013, at home.  She was born in Fargo, ND, on Aug. 8, 1934, to Charles and Susan (Haney) Jones.  She graduated from Helena High School in 1952 and Carroll College in Helena, MT, in 1955 and began work as a registered nurse. Student News

Talking Saints Continue Their Winning Ways

Carroll’s highly regarded Talking Saints forensics team tallied a number of top three finishes in their opening month of competition.  Most recently they returned from the Western Canadian Novice Open held at the University of Calgary, October 25-27 where they earned two of the top four awards.

More than fifty teams from four provinces and Montana competed in World Debate, with Carroll earning two of the four spots in the championship round, which was won by a team from the University of Saskatchewan. The other final team was from the University of British Columbia.

The winning Carroll teams were Ian Hollander from Kalispell, Montana and Trevor Waldorf from Homer, AK. They were joined in the finals by Alaina Hull of Yakima, WA and Sarah Jo Wilcockson of Helena, MT.  Wilcockson and Hollander both won top ten speaker awards, fifth and eighth respectively.

In addition, numerous young Carroll speakers won awards in Idaho and Wyoming. Sophomore Hanna Hillier of Jerome, ID won four awards, with two first places in Prose and two second places in Dramatic Interpretation at tournaments at the College of Southern Idaho (CSI) and at Casper College. With only six students, all first and second year students, Carroll won third place sweepstakes at Casper.

AJ Kelso, a freshman from Boulder, CO won second place in Extemporaneous Speaking at Casper. Sophomore Anna Hoerner of Spokane, WA won third in Poetry at CSI. Other students winning awards included sophomore Desirae Kivett of Spokane, who reached the finals three times in two tournaments, and Chris McClafferty-Helley, a sophomore from CA.

In World Debate at CSI, Carroll won the tournament with freshmen David Harris of Olympia, WA and Kyle Sessions of Spokane defeating Boise and Snow College in the final round.

Carroll is competing at Northwest College in Powell, WY on November 8-9 before heading to Linfield College to compete in the first regional championship tournament on November 15-17. The Talking Saints have won or shared the regional title for 23 consecutive years.

Seniors Looking to Serve Overseas

Ever thought about serving in the Peace Corps?  Montana has a strong record for service in the Peace Corps; on a per capita basis, Montana ranked 7th in the nation in 2012 for sending Peace Corps volunteers. 

Carroll’s own Professor Swartout is a Peace Corps alum having taught middle school in the Republic of Korea from 1970 to 1972.  In an article for the Helena IR, Dr. Swartout recounts “I had such a phenomenal time, I stayed another year…It was the single most important thing I did in my life.” (Helena IR, 2/20/13)

Oxfam Hunger Banquet, Nov. 18, 5 p.m., Student Campus Center Dining Hall, Carroll College

The Hunthausen Center and Sodexo will be sponsoring an Oxfam Hunger Banquet to bring awareness to poverty and hunger issues. At this interactive event, the place where you sit, and the meal that you eat, are determined by the luck of the draw—just as in real life some of us are born into relative prosperity and others into poverty.  Donations will be collected for the YWCA Placer Pantry.  For questions, contact Logan McLean at lmclean@carroll.edu.

Carroll Choirs Fall Concert, Nov. 24, 4 p.m., St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Helena

The theme of the concert is “In Praise of Music,” with several diverse selections which comment on the beauty, spirituality, and power of music. Everyone is welcome and admission is free.
