May 8, 2015 QuickNotes: A Fond Farewell

Life of Leisure

Carroll College has two long-serving and well-liked professors retiring this year – Dr. Tomas Graman, Professor of Spanish and Linguistics and Director of Latin American Studies and Mr. Jack Oberweiser, Associate Professor of Mathematics.  They will be missed and we wish them well on this next phase of their lives.

Best Wishes Dr. Tomas Graman

For over 26 years, Tomas Graman has devoted himself to the work we do at Carroll College, as an enthusiastic professor, active scholar, and stalwart colleague.

Specializing in applied linguistics, Tomas has taught courses in linguistics, language pedagogy, Spanish-language acquisition, and a wide range of Spanish and Latin American literature during his long tenure at Carroll College. Students know Dr. Graman as a passionate professor. His energy and vision shaped the Spanish Program at Carroll. All who have worked closely with Tomas recognize his commitment to an education that not only enables students to learn the Spanish language and about Hispanic cultures, but that wakes them up to social/political issues, pushes them to analyze world events, and transforms their understanding of self and other.

In his scholarship as well as his teaching, Tomas has been a tireless advocate of critical pedagogy and intercultural understanding. Some of his professional achievements include being a senior Fulbright scholar in Xalapa, Mexico, publishing numerous scholarly articles and giving scores of presentations at national and international conferences throughout the U.S. and in Mexico, Spain and Cuba.

At the heart of all these activities—whether he is in the classroom, at faculty assembly, at a conference podium, or writing for a journal—is Tomas's fiery commitment to inquiry, social justice, liberal arts education and intercultural understanding.

Tomas, enjoy a well-deserved retirement! We thank you for the 26 years you gave to our students and our college.

Best Wishes Mr. Jack Oberweiser

Jack–with a guitar always within reach–in Ecuador with the Carroll Outreach Team.

Jack Oberweiser has been a student, professor, friend and servant of Carroll for many years. Jack graduated from Carroll in 1971, and from 1974 to 1980, he taught math part-time. In 1988, he joined the faculty full-time and has served Carroll for the last 20+ years.  Those who know Jack know that he has been anything but a “typical” teacher.  Jack's teaching personifies the inseparable oneness of schola and vita. In Jack, the world and the classroom fuse and become transformed into an fluid, natural, and almost sacred interaction with students, colleagues, staff, and all others he encounters daily.

An effective, popular, and beloved teacher, Jack has filled a special niche in not only the math department but throughout Carroll, particularly when he encounters a student having trouble. His teaching has spilled naturally from the classroom to the coffee shop; from hallways to timbered mountainsides; from an Alpha Seminar lecture to a field trip with students to the Browning Indian reservation.  Students from varied cultural backgrounds, a wide range of learning abilities, health issues, or past struggles are to Jack people of unlimited potential who he enjoys being with and encouraging and helping if he can.

Jack has been on six trips to Mexico with Engineers Without Borders and has traveled seven times with a team led by a local dentist to Haiti, Columbia, Ecuador, and Argentina to assist with dental care to the poor in these countries.

Jack’s colleagues in the Math department wanted to extend a “thank you to Jack for his teaching and service to Carroll, but even more so for his compassion, his enthusiasm, his unfailing good humor, his example, his hope and his gift of always seeing the glass half-full, always looking for the best in people and seeing their potential, always doing what he can to ease any pain, to help smooth any road, and for leading a life of service and hope, and of joy and love.”

You will be missed Jack. Enjoy your retirement and don’t be a stranger!

Forensics Closes Out Season

The Talking Saints finished their seasons quietly, suffering near misses at both national tournaments, while coach and Carroll professor Brent Northup received a career award.

At the National Individual Events Tournament (NIET) at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon, on April 4-6, junior Hanna Hillier of Jerome, Idaho, finished one point short of advancing to quarterfinals in prose interpretation. She earned three firsts and a second, but a fifth place ranking from the fifth judge ended her season.

At NIET, Northup was honored with the 25-year award – only the 16th coach so honored in NIET history – and the first ever from the Western area, which includes Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Arizona and California. Carroll has qualified students for the NIET championships every year since 1990. Northup serves as Western Representative on the NIET executive committee.

Also qualifying for nationals and competing at NIET were juniors Desirae Kivett and Anna Hoerner, both of Spokane.

At the University of Alaska in Anchorage on April 10-13, Carroll’s top team, juniors Ryden Meyer of Portland, Oregon, and Mark Schmutzler of Helena, got off to a hot start in the first five preliminary rounds, advancing them into the top debates against the nation’s top teams.

But Carroll losses in the final preliminary rounds to Yale, Cornell and Stanford sent those teams to octa-finals, and abruptly ended the Talking Saint’s wonderful season. Schmutzler and Ryden had reached semi-finals at Vermont and won the Western Championship at Cal Poly, raising hopes.

The three other Carroll teams also performed well, but none advanced. Competing were freshmen Becca Poliquin of Hamilton, Montana, and her partner Freddy Gray of Boise, Idaho, Tori Hill of Sidney, Montana, and her partner Luke Kendall of Stevensville, Montana, and Jake MacDuff of Preston, Washington, and his junior partner, Nick Fuller of Seattle, Washington.

Diggin' the Dirt

In mid April, the Carroll Enactus club in conjunction with Carroll Green Honors team provided fellow students with the opportunity to plant herbs in reused glass containers.

Enactus was given a grant by ABInBev to help the Helena area recycle glass. The club decided it would be beneficial to start with students on the Carroll campus. The popular project had students waiting in line in the Campus Center to plant rosemary, mint, thyme and sage in a reused glass container.

 Dream Clean Team

One hundred and eighty-six members of the Carroll community–students, faculty, staff, parents, Sodexo employees and friends of Carroll–banded together for the 5th annual Sodexo-Carroll College Clean Helena Day on May 3.

Three-hundred-and-seventeen large bags of trash were collected–in addition to larger items like tires, car parts, and broken signs–from the surrounding Helena area and Carroll campus.

Excellent job team–way to keep Helena beautiful!
