Tree-rific Campus

Carroll College, with some assistance from the 3rd graders at Broadwater Elementary, celebrated Arbor Day by planting three new trees on campus to accompany the nearly 900 trees that grace Carroll’s 45-acre campus.

As part of the Arbor Day celebration, Carroll College was recognized as a Tree Campus USA for the 4th year in a row.

Carroll joins nearly 200 college and university campuses nationwide that have been awarded this distinction. Tree Campus USA recognition is awarded to colleges and universities that meet core standards for sustainable campus forestry with having the ultimate goals of reducing the footprint of college campuses and inspiring a lifelong passion for protecting the environment in today's college students.

Thank you to Gerald Landby, Director of Grounds, and his amazing crew, for the fabulous work they do making Carroll’s campus one to be proud of.

Carroll College’s Education Abroad program was recently recognized by one of the college’s affiliate partners in international education as one of “15 Innovative Study Abroad Offices.”

International Studies Abroad (ISA) is one of Carroll’s affiliate partners with whom we have a number of study and service programs available throughout the world including Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and Latin America. Currently, ISA and Carroll are working on additional projects in Spain and Morocco.

ISA’s Custom Programs division is celebrating its 15th year in service to U.S. universities for their faculty-led and partnerships study abroad programming. To celebrate, they are featuring a series of 15 blog posts for ISA Custom Programs, each with a list of 15 things they are excited about. For April, they recognized Carroll’s ongoing commitment and initiatives in regards to service abroad through ISA-ELAP (Experiential Learn Abroad Program). This is what they had to say about Carroll’s program:

We appreciate that Carroll College strives to instill a passion in all students for civic engagement, active citizenship, and personal responsibility so partnering with ISA-ELAP as a school of record has expanded their outreach efforts and benefited all ISA-ELAP students.

This isn't the first mention of Carroll in the ISA blog. As was noted in the March 14th QuickNotes edition, Nursing professor Donna Greenwood was recognized as a “Top 15 Outstanding Custom Program Faculty Leader” in ISA’s February blog.

Congratulations to Michelle Lewis and Shannon Ackeret in our International Programs Office for the great work they do on behalf of our students!

Lorraine “Lorrie” Mae Merrick (’82) passed away unexpectedly Sunday, May 25, 2014. She will be remembered for her love of life, infectious smile and laughter, and most of all her devotion and care for all of those close to her.

Lorrie was the first of three daughters born Oct. 12, 1960, to Robert and Shirley Bergeron in Edmonton, Alberta. Lorrie spent her early years of life in Edmonton, Fort McMurray and Calgary.

In 1977, she moved to Helena to attend Carroll College. While at college, she met the love of her life, Joe Merrick, in the library (so Joe claims). She graduated at the top of her class with a B.S. in dental hygiene. Shortly after her graduation, she and Joe were married in Canada. Lorrie and Joe celebrated 32 wedding anniversaries together. Joe never failed to make Lorrie laugh and Lorrie was Joe’s rock.

Lorrie and Joe welcomed two children into the world, Cassidy Roshelle (’07) and Matthew Joseph. All those that knew Lorrie, knew that she was a dedicated and loving mother, and Cassidy was the center of her universe.

Lorrie was committed and passionate in her pursuits. As a soccer coach, she led the Elkhorn Hornets to four state championships. Not only did Lorrie work to better the girls’ soccer skills, but she also mentored them off the field. The girls on the team referred to Lorrie as their second mom due to the investment and genuine care she had for each and every one of them. Lorrie continued this when Cassidy’s soccer career took her to college at Carroll. Lorrie quickly became a second mom to many more. Lorrie’s was the Saints’ number one fan, and to Lorrie, this also meant that she was the team’s personal chef, chauffeur, nurse, personal shopper, photographer and, most importantly, Cassidy and her teammates could count on Lorrie for absolutely anything.
