COLLEGE SECRETS DECLASSIFIED As promised in last week's Commencement Edition of QuickNotes, a few of the awards dealt out on Saturday were kept hush-hush until the ceremony began. Now that the embargo is lifted, QNs can lay bare all the mysterious details. In the "top secret" faculty award category, Assistant Professor of Nursing Maria Brosnan (photo right) received the college's Outstanding Teaching Award, and the Distinguished Scholar Award was presented to Assistant Professor of Political Science Zachary Callen (photo left). The surprise student prize, the Michael Murphy Award for Outstanding Collegiate Citizenship, was presented to nursing and Spanish double-major Jade Johnstone (photo right) for her volunteer work as a leading member of the Carroll Outreach Team and her independent endeavors in providing medical care to Montana's poor and migrant workers. For more on her award, read: https://www.carroll.edu/about/pressreleases.php?id=14866 And, speaking of the Carroll Outreach Team, it's now in El Progreso, Honduras, with a number of Carroll students and Carroll Nursing faculty member Dr. Joni Walton offering volunteer medical care through next week. HIT THE POST OFFICE Info on graduation is posted at the Carroll website and on the Helena Independent Record online edition. Here are specifics: A lovely photo gallery of Commencement Day is online at: http://www.carroll.edu/academics/commencement/photos.cc For details on our honorary doctorate recipient Rev. Edward Kohler (photo right), check out: https://www.carroll.edu/about/pressreleases.php?id=14865 For info on the Borromeo Award, which went to the Catholic elementary and secondary schools of Montana, go to: https://www.carroll.edu/about/pressreleases.php?id=14864 And, for the Helena Independent Record's coverage of the Class of 2011's crowning moment: http://helenair.com/news/article_f4f597c6-7933-11e0-810f-001cc4c03286.html BEST OF SHOW Graduation also saw an elite force of 50- and 60-year grads take the stage during a weekend of reveling and reunion fun. Among the Golden Grad highlights was a reflection submitted by Joe Kintli, class of 1961, of Helena, who offered this favorite cherished memory of his Carroll years: "Borrowing" the skeleton from the Science Building and taking it out for a ride with my friend George Krajcsik (also class of 1961). At Gertie's Drive-In, the carhop even brought an extra drink for our friend! The bonesnatchers are still at large, evidenced in the back row center of the commencement-day Golden Grad class photo (above, left), with George to the left of the "O" and Joe to the right of it. (In the wake of our Golden Grad campus reunion, our Natural Sciences Department is now auditing its skeleton count.) Joe and George are not only long-lived Saints alums but also notable for their survival skills: both were part of the contingent of three dozen Hungarian students who sought freedom in America and education at Carroll after the Soviet Union violently suppressed Hungary's 1956 revolution. The production will feature the talents of five aspiring professional ballet dancers from Helena, Livingston, and Bozeman, Mont., performing classical and contemporary ballet. For an operatic interlude, operatic baritone Kevin Mathews will also sing favorites from Man of La Mancha. Admission is open to the public for $10. Ballet Montana Academy is in residence at Carroll and is the only program of its kind, allowing year-round professional ballet preparation for aspiring pro dancers, who also have the rare experience of serving as summer apprentices, training with seasoned professionals of the Ballet Montana troupe during its summer performance season. Ballet Montana dancers from companies all over the US will return to campus in just a few weeks-stay tuned for more ballet news in future editions of QNs. He has other manuscripts in the process of being published, including two invited textbook chapters in Tumors of the Central Nervous System by Springer Publishing. The Montana Dental Outreach Teams, an independent nonprofit that leads our Carroll Outreach Team dental care missions overseas, is inviting Carroll students to consider applying for the two new outreach trips MDOT has in the offing for next year: a Christmas break journey to Haiti (or to Mexico, depending on conditions) and spring break in Columbia or Ecuador. Students from any major are welcome to apply and you need not have prior experience in the Carroll Outreach Team. The cost for each trip will be around $2,400. According to MDOT founder Dr. Tom Bartoletti, the reward for students on these trips is finding meaning in life through service to others. Over the past 10 years, MDOT has provided dental care to the neediest in Eastern Europe, Central and South America and Haiti. These off-the-tourist-route adventures offer true cultural exchange and a joyful immersion in a local language, all while making lifetime friends, changing your heart and opening your eyes. To apply for any of these trips, email Dr. Bartoletti at:  montanadentaloutreach@hotmail.com ALUMNI NEWS In the News Patti States, class of 1982, was recently part of a family profile of academic achievers.
