From Fighting Saint to Battlin' Bear

Parker with Coach Van Diest after Carroll won the 2010 National Football Championship

Carroll Athletic Director Bruce Parker is trading in his Fighting Saints purple and gold for the green and gold of the Battlin’ Bears. It was announced this week that Parker has accepted the position of Director of Athletics at Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana.

Parker was hired by Carroll in 2003 after having served as the Associate Athletic Director at MSU–Bozeman where he had worked for 22 years. Some of his notable accomplishments while at Carroll include overseeing the addition of six new sports programs in the past six years. In addition, Parker has been honored as the NAIA National Athletic Director of the Year, twice as the NAIA Region I Athletic Director of the Year, and six times as the Frontier AD of the Year. He was also honored as one of the 2009 and 2011 NACDA/Under Armour Athletic Directors of the Year.

Under Parker's leadership of the Fighting Saints athletic program, Carroll teams have brought home numerous conference and national titles. Carroll College has been awarded the Frontier Conference's Bandy All-Sports Award six times during Parker's tenure. Plus he has hired many of the talented coaches and staff that support Carroll's student-athletes on a daily basis.

"Bruce has been instrumental in expanding the opportunities for our students to participate in collegiate athletics—opportunities to be successful in the classroom, as well as on the field, court, track or course. Bruce has contributed significantly to increasing the profile of the college during his time as Director of Athletics. We wish him all the best in his new position leading the Rocky Mountain Battlin' Bears," Carroll President Dr. Tom Evans said.

Thank you Bruce for the passion and dedication you have shown to Carroll College in your role as Athletic Director for the past eleven years.  We wish you the very best of luck as you return home to Billings!

On July 1, Carroll Adjunct Professor Ed Noonan is retiring from the Myrna Loy Center after serving 14 years as the Executive Director.

During his 14 years at the helm, he lifted the Myrna from the depths of financial crisis where it had to temporarily close its doors, to a flourishing arts center known for its unique, often sold-out, performances.

On Monday night, June 30, there is a farewell reception for Noonan at 6 p.m. at the Myrna Loy Center. A 7:30 p.m. program will feature reflections by Noonan on his life as a Montana artist. “This will be a program of stories, poems, performance that shows why it was such a great opportunity to run the Myrna,” said Noonan. Tickets are free, but must be reserved by calling 443-0287.

The Bert & Ernie Boys

Anyone who has spent time in Helena is familiar with Bert & Ernie’s. The restaurant, a staple of downtown Helena, is celebrating its 40th anniversary.

Bert & Ernie’s was founded in 1974 by two Carroll College grads: Tom McCarvel (Ernie) and Tim Kennedy (Bert), both from the class of 1971.

It originally opened in the Iron Front Hotel Building in the 400 block of North Last Chance Gulch and was a fun, cozy establishment where one could enjoy a bowl of chili, a great sandwich and a beer.

To learn more about its history and transformation, read the Helena IR article: 40 YEARS IN THE MAKING - Bert & Ernie’s Celebrates Four Decades of Business.

Muscle Men

The weight training has paid off for these Fighting Saint football players who recently helped the Heritage Tourism Council move a mine shaft elevator.

The elevator is an artifact from Caird Engineering Works, one of the oldest and longest running foundry and machine shops in Montana (1895-present). The buildings on the Caird site (located at Malfunction Junction in Helena) are due to be demolished and the Heritage Tourism Council is removing all artifacts, including this mine shaft elevator.

Heritage Tourism Council intern Ryan Armstrong (’15) and senior teammates Alex Kastens and Dom Salle helped unload the elevator at the Trolley Shop facility near the fairgrounds. The Heritage Tourism Council is planning a history exhibit on Caird in the next 18 months and the elevator will be part of that exhibit.
