Sharing Our International Success

Carroll President Dr. Tom Evans was recently invited to present during the NAFSA: Association of International Educators Annual Conference in San Diego, California.

The NAFSA annual conference brings together more than 9,500 professionals in the field of international education for five days of training workshops, educational sessions, networking opportunities and special events. It is the largest gathering of international educators in the world.

In addition to being the keynote speaker at the Japan Special Interest Group where he spoke on Japan/U.S. educational relationships and their importance, Dr. Evans also participated on a panel with the president of Asia Pacific University in Beppu, Japan, Dr. Shun Korenaga. The panel was on the creation of innovative and strong partnerships between two institutions in international education.

“It was an honor to have been asked to serve as the keynote presenter for the Japan special interest group and to sit alongside President Korenaga with our partner institution in Japan to share what we had accomplished together” said Dr. Evans. “For Carroll to be recognized at this caliber of an event as an innovative leader in international education having just been ranked as a top institution in the country for our international programming efforts by International Studies Abroad, was most gratifying.”

Hands On History

Carroll alumnus Mark Johnson (’98) was featured in the winter issue of the Carroll Magazine for his work uncovering Montana’s Chinese history through international collaboration. Johnson is a humanities teacher at the Concordia International School in Shanghai, China but as a Great Falls native, he enjoys traveling to Montana in the summers.

This summer, as he has done in the past, he is using the opportunity to engage his students in futher study of the Chinese experience in Montana. In an ongoing collaboration between his students at Concordia International School and the Montana Historical Society, they are continuing their work on a Chinese translation project through hands-on research.

With his mom and dad at his side, Father Stuart Long (’86), passed away in the early morning hours of Monday, June 9, 2014, at the Big Sky Care Center, where he had resided and ministered since 2010.

Stu grew into a big young man, proud of the powerful physique he developed while wrestling and playing football for the Bruins. He moved on to Carroll College, playing Saints football for two years and developing a passion for boxing, in which he excelled. He graduated from Carroll in 1986 with a degree in English literature and writing.

Stu was ordained a priest by Bishop Thomas on Dec. 14, 2007, at the Cathedral of St. Helena, along with his good friend Father Bart Tolleson. While a seminarian at Mount Angel, he was diagnosed with inclusion body myositis, an extremely rare autoimmune disease that mimics the symptoms of ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease, and for which there is no cure.

In 2010, the diocese brought him home to Helena, where Father Stu took up a new life and ministry at Big Sky Care Center. Father Stu spread his love throughout Helena’s parishes. He celebrated Mass regularly at St. Mary’s and Big Sky Care Center, as well as traveling wherever asked to perform the duties of his calling.

He taught by example, willingly accepting the pain and weakness each day brought; Stu said it was the best thing that ever happened to him, because it allowed him to shed the pride he had felt for most of his life. Father Stu will be missed, but his legacy of love and selflessness lives on in the hearts and minds of all he served.
