July 22, 2011 QuickNotes

FOOD FOR MORE THAN THOUGHTAt last Saturday's Symphony Under the Stars at Carroll, concertgoers eagerly answered the request to pin down their blankets with canned foods then donated them to Helena Food Share that same night. The response was overwhelming-this summer symphony food drive, now in only its second year, brought in 8,600 pounds of groceries, making the night one of the largest single-day food collections for the local food pantry. Last year's inaugural food drive at the event brought in 5,600 pounds, and the one and a half ton increase comes at a critical time for Food Share.  In May 2011, the nonprofit broke its record for  free monthly grocery box distributions, and in June, that record was again shattered, with nearly 1,400 families requesting food assistance, including 93 new families signed on to the program. Helena Food Share Director Ann Waickman calls Symphony Under the Stars "Christmas in July" for her organization and lauds the Helena Symphony and Carroll for spearheading its success. Waickman gave particular thanks to hardworking, food-hauling volunteers at the event, including Carroll's Facilities and Grounds crews, Carroll Ambassadors, the college's Facilities Director Butch Biskupiak and Admission Counselor Carrie Lutkehus. THE INQUISITION-WITH A TOUCH OF ROMANCE Next Wednesday through Friday (July 27-29), Carroll's own Ballet Montana, in-residence at Carroll, presents its 16th summer season at the Myrna Loy Center in Helena, with shows at 8 p.m. nightly. Ballet Montana is the state's professional ballet company, and its founding director Sallyann Mulcahy (photo left), who serves as Carroll's director of dance and artist in residence, will present two original, world-premiere works. The opener, Cuarteto Romantico, features a variety of contemporary ballets choreographed to the passionate music of the romance languages. It will be followed by The Inquisition of Don Miguel, an original story ballet depicting what befell the author of Don Quixote in his quest to characterize knight errantry. Veterans from past Ballet Montana (formerly Artisan Dance) seasons are joined this summer by new professional ballet performers from New York, Texas and Pennsylvania. Renowned Helena artist Tim Holmes is creating the backdrops for Don Miguel. Tickets are $20 each and available at the door or by reservation: call 406-443-0287, visit www.myrnaloycenter.com or drop by the Myrna Loy box office located at 15 N. Ewing Street in Helena, just east of the county courthouse. THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT The college has two groups of standout youngsters on campus over the last half of July, with this past week featuring kids in the GEAR UP camp to inspire challenged kids to aspire for college, and this weekend bringing us middle-school participants in the college's 27th annual Carroll College Gifted Institute. GEAR UP middle schoolers this week engaged in a variety of science field work experiences and cultural offerings. The theme of the camp was "Preserving the Planet," and in keeping with it the 52 GEAR UP kids, led by Carroll alum Jacquie Schmidt (biology class of 2009) and her crew of six Carroll faculty and staffers and 12 current and former Carroll students working as camp counselors, have been studying water quality, amphibian life, sustainable building and the pine beetle outbreak on Mount Helena. This year's GEAR UP participation at Carroll is up by over 10 percent from last year, strengthening this outstanding annual program aimed at encouraging college admission for underserved youth, including children from Montana's Indian reservations. STUDENT NEWS Carroll student Nikia Greene (photo right) was recently hired as the federal Environmental Protection Agency as its new "community involvement coordinator" overseeing public relations for Superfund issues in the Butte area. Greene previously worked 15 years in the construction industry in Helena and is pursuing civil engineering at Carroll. At the July 16, 2011, 65th annual Montana East-West Shrine Football game in Laurel, Mont., the West team had a winning powerhouse coach in Troy Purcell (photo left, in center), class of 1990 and former Fighting Saint football player, who led the team to victory. Purcell brought plenty of hard-hitting experience with him as the coach who guided the Bozeman Hawks to their first state football title in 93 years this past fall. He's been the head coach for the Hawks for six years, and prior to that he was the head coach in Havre. The West win was his second in two tries as a Shrine head coach. The conference focuses on characterization of petroleum contaminated sites. "Soils and groundwater that become contaminated require investigations including drilling and performing tests on aquifers to assess the extent of contamination and the best approach to perform cleanup," Weight says. "My expertise is in the  aquifer characterization part where field methods are used to estimate properties used to predict the movement and extent of contamination and the proposed effectiveness of a remediation method." Mexico's national oil giant PEMEX has contamination sites throughout Mexico, much like spill sites here in the US, so the conference talk by Dr. Weight is very timely and relevant to both our nations. Dr. Brian Matz (photo left), assistant professor of theology, reports that the lectures he recorded in April for the company Doctors-in-Training, Inc., are now live and available for use by healthcare professionals for their CEUs.
