JULY 19, 2013

Editor’s Note: You may have noticed that QuickNotes has been on a short summer vacation. Our famed QuickNotes editor, Ashley Oliverio, has left Carroll to pursue new opportunities. Ashley made significant contributions during her time at Carroll.  In addition to her wordsmithing, editing and speechwriting, she produced the Carroll Magazine, edited Carroll's history book, directed a science documentary, advanced Carroll's image on social media, and provided her expertise to our enrollment and fundraising efforts. We will all miss Ashley’s wit and creativity in our email inboxes and we wish her good fortune in all her future pursuits.

FIESTA & FIREWORKS

The 10th annual Symphony Under the Stars kicks off this Saturday at 8:30 pm on the Carroll hillside. Blankets are already covering the lawn but there is plenty of room for everyone.

“From congas to mambos, the concert is all about rhythm and dance that is energetic, exuberant and most of all infectious,” said Symphony Music Director Allan R. Scott.

A preconcert by the King Fiesta Mariachis from Washington begins at 6:30 p.m. An instrument “petting zoo” is from 5 to 7 p.m. Food and drink vendors will be on hand, including a Billings vendor selling Mexican food and the Montana Club offering margaritas.

Those attending are urged to not park on campus but at the Great Northern Town Center parking garage. No dogs or tobacco products are allowed at the concert. Concert goers can spread out picnic blankets and we encourage everyone to use canned food to hold them down. The cans will be collected during the concert for Helena Food Share. And PLEASE, no tarps, stakes, paint or rocks are allowed. See you Saturday!

FILL 'ER UP

Six new water fountains have been installed on campus - PE Center, O'Connell Hall, the Campus Center, St. Charles, the Library, and Simperman Hall. The bottle filling stations, which are sensor activated, help minimize plastic bottle waste and make it easier to fill your bottle.  The drinking fountain in the Campus Center has already helped eliminate waste from 632 disposable plastic bottles.

HARD HATS REQUIRED

Construction orange, road closed signs and hard hats have become the dress code this summer.  Guadalupe Hall’s new parking lot, new windows for the South side of Simperman Hall, and a new water main up to St. Charles are just a few of the projects.

The Carroll family extends congratulations to Andrea (’07) and Dan (’06) Thies on the new addition to their family.  Isaac Hammer Thies was born July 2 at St. Peter’s Hospital in Helena, MT.

FACULTY/STAFF NEWS

Jackie Clawson, assistant director of community living, and Linda Bahr, general manager of Carroll dining services, just returned from a 10-day build project with Habitat for Humanity in Zambia, Africa.   With six other Global Village volunteers from around the world Clawson and Bahr were immersed in the culture of the Lusaka village and all the smiling children that come with it.  Their crew built and finished two houses, visited the compound school, a women’s clinic, and went to a Catholic mass.  Clawson, the team leader of the trip, got to hand the keys of the new homes to the families (photo at right.)  “The joy on their faces was so moving,” Clawson said.  Bahr spent two days cooking with the local women who prepared traditional meals for the work crews.  Clawson has lead two Habitat for Humanity trips with Carroll students in the past and plans on leading another in Spring of 2014.  She said the best part about the Habitat projects is working with the families and communities, not for them.  You can read about the experience on Clawson’s blog: http://habitatzambia2013.wordpress.com/

Bennett MacIntyre has a new job title at Carroll as associate director of athletics and executive director of the Saints’ Athletic Association. MacIntyre has been the director of community living for the past 7 years.  Since 2007 he has also lead the Saint’s men’s and women’s golf team.  The full story is recounted here.
