GETTING COLLARED

Tomorrow night, Summer Theatre returns to Carroll with the world premiere of The Collar – A Musical!, written by Carroll 1964 alumnus Dr. Frank C. Seitz from his 2007 book The Collar and directed by Professor Chuck Driscoll. International composer Eric Funk created a musical score of memorable songs that tell the story of a passionate but prayerful priest, Father Christopher, who struggles with love, doubt and isolation. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. in the Carroll College Theatre (Old North, St. Charles Hall) on these dates: Friday through Sunday July 13-14-15; Friday and Sunday, July 20 and 22;  and Saturday through Sunday, July 28 and 29. (Photo left: Seitz, left, with Funk in the Carroll Theatre)

Tickets are $16 each and available at the door on the night of the performance you choose to attend; call 406-447-4304 to reserve seats on the date of your choice. A feature story on The Collar – A Musical! appears in today’s Helena Independent Record at: http://helenair.com/entertainment/yourtime/a-love-story-of-a-different-kind/article_52fef578-cbeb-11e1-acbf-001a4bcf887a.html

SADDLE UP FOR SYMPHONY

“The Wild West” comes to campus on Saturday, July 21, with the annual Symphony Under the Stars, at 8:30 p.m. on its traditional grounds at Carroll College near Guadalupe Hall, corralling thousands of concertgoers for a free night of western-themed orchestral fare under the Big Sky. “The Wild West” concert features popular staples like the scores from classics such as The Magnificent Seven and Big Country, plus the show-stopping William Tell Overture (the theme from The Lone Ranger). Special guest artist, Grammy Award-winning violinist/composer Mark O’Connor, will perform three of his original works, and it’s all capped off with the season’s finest fireworks display.

Instead of rocks and stakes (banned at the site), hold down your picnic blankets with cans of food and boxes of pasta—the event is a drive for Helena Food Share, which will have collection boxes and trucks on the symphony grounds. Symphony is the biggest non-holiday-season collection for Food Share, dedicated to a hunger-free Helena. A commemorative symphony poster (photo left) by children’s book illustrator Connie Bergum is on sale for $20 at the Helena Symphony offices (48 Hibbard Way in Helena, just around the corner from Riley’s Irish Pub) and signed copies will be available on concert night, as will a variety of vittles from various vendors.

On show day, bring your lawn chairs and blankets (no tarps) to the site to reserve your place. Pets and cigarettes should be left at home. Limited reserved seats might still be available at the symphony office: call 406-442-1860. Check details on Facebook at: http://www.facebook.com/SymphonyUnderTheStars  A feature story previewing the fun is at: http://helenair.com/news/local/symphony-under-the-stars-goes-western/article_514a1d9a-c7f7-11e1-9b8f-001a4bcf887a.html

In Memoriam

Retired Helena attorney John W. “Jack” Mahan, who attended Carroll in 1946, died on July 4, 2012, a fitting date for this former World War II Marine pilot and national veterans leader. After the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, Jack served as a US Marines dive bomber pilot in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After his discharge as a major in 1945, he attended Carroll then went on to law school at the University of Montana, with his admission to the state bar in 1949. Jack began practicing law in Helena and built a successful trial law practice. He would become a leader in forwarding veterans’ rights, becoming the national commander in chief of the 1.3 million-member VFW in 1958-1959. He worked with Montana’s congressional delegation to get a new veterans hospital built at Fort Harrison, west of Helena. Throughout his career, Jack got to know Presidents Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford and worked with them on veterans’ issues. While working full time to support his wife and children, he earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration and accounting from Carroll then went on to work three decades for the state of Montana as a fiscal officer, a bureau chief and director of the Montana Telecommunications Services for the Telephone Handicapped (MTTH). As director, Dan took the lead in establishing the Montana Relay System in May 1991, which brought new telephone technology to the hearing impaired throughout Montana and many western states.  For more on his life, read: http://helenair.com/news/local/obituaries/g-daniel-pouliot-jr/article_56929604-c33f-11e1-9d35-001a4bcf887a.html
