MOOT VOICES

Carroll’s Moot Court Team recently returned from national competition that ended with Carroll student Kari Rice (team photo right in center) placing in the US top 10. Rice, along with four other Carroll students, presented mock appellate legal argument at a tournament held at Chapman University Law School in Orange County, Calif. This was Rice’s second time going to nationals, where this year 80 teams gathered from 35 different schools. According to team coach and Carroll grad Tara Harris (who is a deputy county attorney in Helena and adjunct professor of constitutional law at Carroll), “Each of the three preliminary rounds had either two or three justices, and Kari and her partner from California State University-Long Beach, Wyatt Lyles, won all three rounds and won every justice’s ballot.  As a result, their ranking going into outrounds the next day was fifth out of 80 teams.”  The full story is online at: http://helenair.com/

 THE TAX MAN COMETH

On Tuesday, January 31, the public is invited to the next of Carroll College’s Business Department Lecture Series events, “Property Transactions: The Basics,” at 4 p.m. in the college’s O’Connell Hall room 107. The free, public lecture will cover common tax issues related to residential and investment properties, including capital gains and losses, installment sales and tax avoidance tactics. The tax consequences of inherited property and land improvements will be among many other topics discussed. Presenters Joel Silverman and Spencer Marks, both with the Montana Department of Revenue, are highly knowledgeable in tax and legal issues related to tax transactions.

Silverman received his law degree from Lewis and Clark College in 2003 and his LL.M. in taxation from the University of Washington in 2004.  He spent three years in private practice in Butte assisting clients with corporate matters, estate planning, wealth transfer, tax planning and property transactions.  He joined the Montana Department of Revenue in November of 2006 and has reviewed and litigated federal taxation issues.

Marks is a Carroll 2006 accounting and business administration graduate and a CPA licensed to practice in Montana and North Dakota. Currently he is a tax auditor for the Montana Department of Revenue. His work primarily consists of auditing complex partnerships, S-corporations, non-profits, and high-wealth individual state and federal income tax returns. He devotes time to Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), preparing federal and state tax returns for low- to moderate-income taxpayers and the elderly.

 STRENGTH IN NUMBERS

Our nearly 30 student participants in this year’s worldwide Mathematical Contest in Modeling and Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling are preparing for the 96 straight hours of competition kicking off February 9, and they need you to provide the precious calories to fortify them for the math, science, engineering and computer science challenges they’ll face. Carroll Computer Science and Math Professor Phil Rose welcomes anyone who would graciously host a team of three students for dinner (at home or a restaurant) on February 10, 11 or 12. We anticipate this year to have 10 teams enter, so volunteers are warmly invited to provide the nourishment and camaraderie our students appreciate so much during this competition. The meals make a difference: in the past few years, Carroll teams have brought home top-in-the-world honors three times and last year a Carroll team finished in the elite 2% of all papers submitted. Volunteers wishing to fuel this success by providing meals on one or more nights during this February’s event should email Dr. Rose at prose@carroll.edu.

THE CORNERSTONE

The Hunthausen Center for Peace and Justice has announced the unveiling of a new space called the Cornerstone, dedicated to our Catholic identity. With leadership provided by Dr. Kay Satre and Carroll’s Spiritual Vitality Committee, the Cornerstone took shape in Borromeo Hall as a home for not only the Hunthausen Center but also the Sr. Annette Moran Forum, with other Catholic constituencies also envisioned as future residents. Everyone is welcome to tour the Cornerstone next Friday, January 27, at 2:30 p.m., when Bishop George Leo Thomas will bless and dedicate the space.

FACULTY AND STAFF NEWS

Professor Kelly Parsley, program chair for Health Sciences, was recently selected to present at the April 2012 Family and Community health Conference (FCHC). The FCHC is an annual conference sponsored by the Montana Department of Health and Human Services. Parsley will be presenting “Adolescent Health and Sexual Assault:  A Public Health Response.”  Her paper focuses on using public health models to improve the lives and safety of adolescent girls.

Professor of Education Jonathan Matthews will be competing this Sunday, January 22, in the U.S. Olympic Trials, which will select the team to compete in the longest footrace in the Olympics: the 50-kilometer race walk. Matthews says, “At five miles further than a marathon, race walking a 50K is a severe test of endurance. At age 55, I am the oldest person to ever qualify for the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 50K race walk, and the favorites to win the race are in their 20s and 30s, as is to be expected. Even though I am twice the age of the favorites, I have the fourth fastest qualifying time in the nation and the third fastest time among those entered. In addition to competing in the Olympic Trials in the 50-kilometer race walk this Sunday, I have also become the oldest person to ever qualify for the U.S. Olympic Trials in track and field, which will be held the last week of June in Eugene, Ore., where I will be competing in the 20-kilometer race walk.”

Photography professor Jeff Van Tine will represent Carroll faculty at this weekend’s Friendship Center Table Tennis Marathon, and he welcomes everyone to support him and the cause by making a pledge. Helena’s Friendship Center is a safe haven for victims of domestic violence, including women and their children. The fun play starts tonight and continues tomorrow, January 21, at Broadwater Athletic Club Westside (4920 US Highway 12 West). Celeb players and tons of fun will be on the table, all discussed on the cool Facebook site for the contest: http://www.facebook.com/events/206413599444938/. To help the shelter’s resident families, donate at: http://thefriendshipcenter.org/donate/. Or give a tax-deductible donation, with checks made out to the Friendship Center (and sent to the Helena Table Tennis Club, 1207 Hauser, Helena, MT 59601 or brought to the Broadwater event). All donations go directly to the Helena Friendship Center.

Our story: on the biggest night in the history of the Grand Opera Company, world famous tenor Morelli is to perform “Otello,” his greatest role, at the gala season opener. However, Morelli shows up late and drunk, then appears to drop dead. A nervous amateur takes the star’s place, but Morelli revives and hits the stage, with a grand farce resulting. Shows are Thursdays through Saturdays (Feb. 16-18 and Feb. 23-25) at 7:30 p.m., Sunday matinees (Feb. 19 and 26) at 3 p.m. In the Carroll College Theatre, Old North, St. Charles Hall.
