We’ll feature the best anecdotes in some of our upcoming publications. Email us your stories at news@carroll.edu.

Congratulations to our Carroll College athletes who have been recognized by the Helena IR for their exceptional accomplishments this past year.

Independent Record’s 2013 Male Athlete of the Year:

Sean Blomquist

As was noted in the IR, the humble Carroll College middle linebacker pieced together a remarkable junior season on the gridiron and earned national recognition in the process. For his efforts, Blomquist was named the Frontier’s Defensive Player of the Year, was selected to the AFCA All-America first team and Beyond Sports Network NAIA All-America squad and was an NAIA National Player of the Year nominee. In addition, he was also a finalist for the inaugural Cliff Harris award.

Other notable mentions included:

Easton Padden

The five-time All-American captured national pole vault titles at both the indoor and outdoor NAIA Track and Field Championships over the course of the last school year for the Carroll College track team.

Dustin Rinker

The 5-9, 205-pound junior running back for Carroll led the conference in rushing and broke the school’s season record with 1,960 yards. Rinker was selected to the NAIA Beyond Sports Network and AFCA All-American teams.

On the women’s side notable mentions included:

Leah Esposito

A Carroll College freshman distance runner, Esposito earned NAIA All-American cross country status by placing seventh at the national meet, traversing the 3-mile course in 18:05.52, just one second out of sixth. It is the school’s highest finish at nationals.

Kathleen Mulligan

A 6-foot-2 junior two-sport athlete for Carroll College, Mulligan became the Saints’ first national outdoor track and field champion, winning the 2013 NAIA triple jump in Marion, Ind., with a leap of 39-10. A four-time All-American, the Des Moines, WA, product had previously placed second and third at nationals. Mulligan is also a two-time All-Conference outside hitter in volleyball.

Jamie Carter

A first team All-Conference soccer goalie, Carter was also tabbed honorable mention NAIA All-American. The freshman from Camas, WA, helped the Saints record four shutouts this fall, while averaging 1.1 goals-against and 5.4 saves. Carter stopped 84 percent of the shots she faced.

Courting the New Year

On New Year's Eve, the Carroll basketball teams volunteered their time to put on a skills clinic at the Helena YMCA.  They raised nearly $600 for the YMCA's Youth Sports program.

"We feel it is important for our team to give back to the community in any way we can. It was a lot of fun for our players to share their love for basketball with the young ladies who dream of following in their footsteps” said women’s coach Rachelle Sayers. “It is important to me, as their coach, to help them understand what great examples they can set and what positive role models they are and how important that is to our community."

Bottom right: Men's Basketball team captain, Jake Hollifield, coaches his group on the art of the layup.

Bring a Smile to Their Face

The Carroll Outreach Team (COT) and Montana Dental Outreach Team (MDOT) are teaming up for a trip to Argentina, Feb. 28 – Mar. 9, 2014.  They are looking for 6 to 10 students to join this trip and faculty and staff are welcome to apply as well.

The mission of COT is to bring together students, faculty, alumni, and other friends of Carroll College to provide direct service and aid to people in need, at home and around the world. Working directly with professionals in health care, engineering, and education, students will provide direct assistance as well as monetary aid to work with organizations or individuals already on the ground in developing countries or areas of need within the U.S.

This is the second trip COT and MDOT have made to Argentina. “Argentina is different, there is something unique about this place, and this is why we are going back. The students really experience culture and language while helping mankind” – Dr. Robert Thomas Bartoletti, Founder of Montana Dental Outreach Teams.

This trip will take place in remote villages in the extravagant province of Jujuy, Argentina. The villages are Tusaquillas and Rinconada, at 3800 meters (12.500 feet) above sea level, and rural populations under 300. These areas are in profound need of dental service namely due to poverty, remote location, and lack of effective health care.

View last year’s Youtube video of the trip here.

For details on the program, view the flyer here.  An application can be downloaded at www.montanadentaloutreachteams.com or by contacting montanadentaloutreach@hotmail.com.

For questions, please email Dr. Bartoletti (montanadentaloutreach@hotmail.com) or Gaspar Tognetti (gtognetti@gmail.com) as soon as possible.

Voices of Angels

In the spring of 2014, Carroll College will be forming a Hospice Choir to serve patients in the care of the Hospice of St. Peter’s.  As a form of music therapy, which is using musical interactions to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals; hospice choirs sing to the terminally ill and to those who are in the midst of their end of life experience.  They sing with the spiritual purpose of comforting patients, easing their pain, and being present with them.

Carroll Students who have an interest in singing in a hospice choir are invited to attend an informational meeting Wednesday, January 15 at 7 p.m., Old North 039 (The Music Room) and will be hosted by Dr. Robert Psurny, Associate Professor of Music at Carroll, and Lynne Grant, Hospice Social Worker and Volunteer Coordinator for the Hospice of St. Peters.  The meeting will be an informational session, and there will also be ample opportunity for students to ask questions about the experience.  For more information, please contact Dr. Robert Psurny at 447-4807, rpsurny@carroll.edu.
