Heading Up the A-Team

Karin Olsen, Vice President of Philanthropy

We wish to welcome Karin Olsen as Carroll’s new Vice President of Philanthropy. 

Karin most recently served as Executive Director of the North Valley Hospital Foundation in Whitefish, Mont. and brings more than 30 years experience in fundraising, business operations and management with her to Carroll.   

In announcing her appointment, Dr. Tom Evans said, “We are excited to have a development professional of Karin Olsen’s caliber joining our advancement team. Her extensive development background, coupled with a strong foundation in Catholic education, makes her an excellent choice to lead Carroll's efforts in moving the institution forward.”

In her position as Vice President of Philanthropy, Karin oversees the Office of Institutional Advancement, a role that Tom McCarvel filled on extended interim basis after the departure of Richard Ortega in August 2011. With Karin’s arrival this week, Tom has resumed his role as Vice President for Community Relations.  

The entire Carroll family is incredibly grateful for Tom’s time, energy and commitment in fulfilling these dual roles during this 28-month timeframe.  

Thank you Tom for your extraordinary dedication to Carroll and welcome Karin to our Carroll family.

A Senator in Our Midst

Lt. Gov. John Walsh (class of 1984) was sworn in as Montana’s next U.S. senator on Feb. 10, 2014.  He was appointed by Governor Steve Bullock to serve out the final year of the term of Max Baucus, who resigned to become the next U.S. ambassador to China.  Read more in the Billings Gazette.

Fabulous Fifty

Celebrating 50 years of marriage are Bill and Judy Schweyen (’62). They met in Helena and were married in Red Lodge on Feb. 8, 1964. Bill was working for the Montana Highway Department and Judy was an R.N. at St. John’s Hospital in Helena when they met.  Bill grew up in Kenmare, N.D., and graduated from South Dakota State University. Judy grew up in Red Lodge and graduated in nursing from Carroll College.

Career Moves

Colleen Dunne, a 1994 Carroll graduate and former Director of Carroll’s Campus Ministry, has joined the National Catholic Reporter in Kansas City, Missouri as part of the Global Sisters team tasked with expanding coverage of women religious across the globe.  Colleen has been a NCR Bertelson intern since last August and will focus her reporting on the sisters project.

The Helena Brewers announced the hiring of former Carroll College linebacker Dylan LaPlante (’13) as their director of group sales and marketing. The Temecula, Calif., native lettered two years and was a member of the 2010 NAIA national championship football team before graduating in 2013 from the school with a BA in communications.

Cecile Sorensen (’97) has been promoted to FSR Member Service for the downtown branch of Missoula Federal Credit Union. Sorensen has a background in customer service in the banking, health care, education and retail industries. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Carroll College in sports management and business administration.

IN MEMORIAM 

Always a romantic, Harold Hanser (’52) joined his wife Marieanne for St. Valentine’s Day in heaven. He passed away peacefully at his home on Fri., Feb. 14, 2014. Harold was born at home on the family farm in Broadview on Aug. 16, 1930, to William and Helen (Benesh) Hanser. Harold attended St. Patrick High School in Billings and graduated from Holy Rosary High School in Bozeman. He received his bachelor’s degree from Carroll College and law degree from the University of Montana. Harold was elected as the Yellowstone County attorney, a position he held for 20 years. During this time, he was able to put into practice his belief in social and restorative justice, becoming an advocate for women, children and victims of crime.

Our sweet Marianne passed away on Feb. 8, 2014. She was surrounded with love by her family. We will miss her humor, her strength and her loving heart every day.  Marianne Elizabeth Altmaier Garrett Milne (’51) was born at home in Bozeman, Mont., on July 22, 1930. She was the fourth of six children born to Clarence John Altmaier and Mildred Elizabeth Taliman Altmaier. In 1941, the family moved to Billings, Mont., and Marianne attended Fratt Memorial School and Senior High School. She went on to Carroll College and completed her degree as a Registered Nurse in December 1951. She was head surgical nurse at St. Vincent Hospital for 27 years. She also worked at Deaconess Hospital in the trauma unit and worked as a contract nurse In Billings.

Maureen C. Murphy (’61) was born in Butte to John and Rena Giacoma on July 8, 1940. She entered into Heaven’s gates on Feb. 15. 2014. How fitting her last full day on earth was Valentine’s Day, as she was the epitome of “love” to her all of her family, friends and patients.  Maureen was a graduate of Carroll College in nursing and graduated with a group of nurses who became lifelong friends and a source of countless stories, adventures and support. Maureen worked as a nurse in several places, including St. Patrick’s Hospital in Missoula. However, the majority of her career was at the Curry Health Service at the University of Montana. She cared for UM students for 30 years, retiring in 2005. She cared for her students as if they were her own children, providing them with the attention, nurturing and love they needed for complete healing.

John T. “Jack” Whalen, MD, (’39) born January 9, 1918 in Walkerville, Mont., passed away peacefully in Spokane on Jan. 31, 2014. A Montanan in spirit, Jack grew up in Butte and also on family ranches outside of Butte and near Ronan, Mont. during summers, where riding horses and hard work was a way of life. He graduated from Carroll College in 1939, and went on to earn his medical degree at the St. Louis University School of Medicine in November 1943. That same month, he was appointed an assistant surgeon, lieutenant junior grade, in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Navy, via the Navy’s V12 program through which he financed his medical school education.

Upcoming Events

Joel Soiseth Art Exhibition, now through Feb. 28, Carroll Art Gallery, St. Charles Hall, Carroll College

In its final week, the gallery exhibit "Edgy" features the paintings of Joel Soiseth.  Soiseth has been an art professor at MSU-Northern for 26 years. He says some of his art has been directly influenced by historical works, especially Jan Van Eyck, the early “surrealist” Hieronymus Bosch, the later Surrealist movement and the “dark manner” of artists like Leonardo Da Vinci and Caravaggio.

The gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays and is closed weekends and college holidays. For more information, call 447-4302.  

“Lysistrata” presented by the Carroll College Theatre Department, Feb. 21-23, Carroll Theatre in St. Charles Hall, Carroll College 

Shows will be at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Business Department Lecture Series The Successful Freedom-franchise Model presented by Great Harvest Franchising, Inc., Feb. 25, 6-7:30 p.m., 101/202 Simperman Hall/Wiegand Amphitheatre, Carroll College

As part of the Fiehrer Endowed Lectureship series, the Carroll College Business Department is hosting a presentation by Great Harvest Franchising, Inc. on the successful freedom-franchise model.  Kathy Peterson, Agreement & Mapping Specialist, Heidi Melendez, Director of Development, and Melissa Seith, Registered Dietician will be discussing the unique freedom-franchise model and the successful business processes at Great Harvest Franchising, Inc. The presenters will describe their roles at Great Harvest followed by a question and answer session.

Astronomy & Physics Lecture Series: “Gravity's Greatest Mystery” Mar.13, 7 p.m. 101/202 Simperman Hall/Wiegand Amphitheatre, Carroll College

Join Dr. Kelly Cline for the second of his popular astronomy & physics lecture series presentations. Before MESSENGER, only half of the planet Mercury had been photographed up close. That’s why NASA launched the MESSENGER mission, the first space probe to orbit around Mercury, the smallest planet in our solar system. For the past few years MESSENGER has been working hard to solve the many mysteries of this strange planet. Why is Mercury unusually dense? Does it have a larger core than the other inner planets?  Where does Mercury’s magnetic field come from? What is the source of Mercury’s thin atmosphere? MESSENGER’s recent discoveries have changed our understanding not just of Mercury but of our entire solar system!
