December 9, 2011 QuickNotes

PRESIDENTIAL PASSAGE As most readers already have learned, Carroll President Tom Trebon (photo right) has resigned effective last week, due to personal health issues. This came to light last week in a sudden news development that went public after QNs was published. Carroll's board of trustees accepted this resignation and appointed as interim president Carroll Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean Paula McNutt (photo left). Thus, Dr. McNutt becomes this college's first woman chief executive. Dr. Mark Parker, currently chair of Carroll's Math, Engineering, and Computer Science Department and associate dean for academic affairs, has agreed to take on the role of the vice president for academic affairs during Dr. McNutt's term as interim president. For more, read http://www.carroll.edu/about/pressreleases.php?id=15688 and http://www.carroll.edu/about/pressreleases.php?id=15689 As if this weren't big enough news, the campus has been visited already this week by one of the three finalists for the president's job, pursuant to the national presidential search begun last spring. Two others will be coming to campus next week to meet with the Carroll community. In keeping with the tone of this search, and specific requests to keep candidate visits and identities limited to the campus community for now, QNs cannot release the prospectives' names to a broader audience (like thousands of QNs readers across the globe). However, with the selection of our next Carroll president likely to be announced before Christmas, you won't have long to wait for the big news on the denouement of this presidential drama. CARROLL'S ROMAN LEGIONS And, there's even more huge news that everyone already knows about: the six-time national champion Fighting Saints football team has prevailed in the semifinals and heads to Rome, Ga., for the NAIA national championship game just one week from tomorrow. And, it gets better: our Carroll veterans, dragging their knuckles with the weight of all those championship rings, will face the St. Xavier (Ill.) Cougars, newcomers to the championship arena. And, there's more: BOTH teams will be represented in the stands by presidents who are women. Kickoff on Saturday, December 17, occurs at 4:30 p.m. (EST) at Barron Stadium at Shorter University in Rome, Ga. This game will be NATIONALLY televised by CBS Sports Television. Game watch parties have already been scheduled nationwide, with more added to the list daily. Check the Carroll website for parties in your area:  www.carroll.edu/alumni Anyone interested in planning a game watch open to other Carroll supporters should contact our Alumni Director Kathy Ramirez at kramirez -is-at- carroll -dot- edu or 406-447-5185, so she can assist with promotion of your event. The Carroll team qualified during its December 2-3 showing in the Western regional tournament of the American Collegiate Moot Court Association, held at California State University-Long Beach.  At regionals, Carroll sent six students in three teams of two students each. Among them were junior Kari Rice and senior Ryan Lorenz, both from Helena; juniors Michael Yamoah of Accra, Ghana, and Sabrina Nystrom of Polson, Mont.; and junior Laramy Ayers and senior Amy Dixon, both of Billings, Mont.  All three teams, coached by adjunct professor of political science Tara Harris, earned an invitation to the national tournament. Harris is a 2000 Carroll graduate and works as a Lewis and Clark deputy county attorney in Helena. For more, read: https://www.carroll.edu/about/pressreleases.php?id=15722 (Photo above, left to right: Laramy Ayers, Ryan Lorenz, Kari Rice, coach Tara Harris, Amy Dixon, Sabrina Nystrom, and Michael Yamoah) CHRISTMAS ON THE EASTERN FRONT The much awaited Advent and Christmas concert by the Carroll Choir and Chamber Choir is this Sunday, December 11, at the Cathedral of St. Helena. "East Meets West," featuring magnificent choral entertainment, starts at 4 p.m. with featured seasonal works from Eastern Europe. The choir will perform three Latvian carols by Andrejs Jansons, two Ukrainian Christmas carols, and a liturgical piece from the Russian Orthodox church by Pavel Chesnokov.  Then, the choir moves even further "east" to perform Adinu, a Sufi song in Arabic. Carroll's Chamber Choir will present Lithuanian composer Vytautas Miskinis' setting of Lucis Creator Optime and the hauntingly beautiful setting of the Magnificat by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt.  The concert also includes selections of Christmas music from America and Britain by composers Z. Randall Stroope, Bob Chilcott, Karl Jenkins, and Stephen Harrap. All music will be performed a cappella, and a number of Carroll student soloists will be featured. Admission to the concert is free but a freewill offering will be accepted to benefit the music fund at the Cathedral of St. Helena.  Both choirs are directed by Dr. Robert Psurny Jr., associate professor of music at Carroll.  For more information on this concert, contact Dr. Psurny at 447-4807. In other Carroll music news, next Monday, December 12, the Carroll Jazz Combo gives a free concert in the Campus Center at 4 p.m. Take a finals break and feast your ears on some jazz standards performed by Carroll students, with Fine Arts faculty accompaniment. LAST CALL FOR SHODAIR SANTAS Next Tuesday, December 13, is the last day for collecting Christmas gifts for the kids at Helena's Shodair Children's Hospital. This gift drive is led by Carroll's Student Nurses Association (CCSNA), and collection boxes are located in the Scola next to the Christmas tree and in the O'Connell Hall lobby near the front desk.  Unwrapped gifts can also be dropped off at the Nursing Department Office, room 415 Simperman Hall. Shodair's children can use art supplies, puzzles and board games, trading cards (like Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh), Legos, Lincoln Logs, K'nexs and other building toys, Beanie Babies, My Little Pony toys, Nerf balls, footballs, soccer balls, basketballs, books for ages 5-17 (with subjects like animals, origami and drawing, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Twilight and Harry Potter series), action figures and Transformers, Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars, small hand-held games (like Connect Four, 20 Questions, Bingo), DVDs (G and PG movies, nature and science movies), or hats, gloves, slippers, socks, t-shirts and hoodies for boys and girls ages 5-17. Gift cards are also wonderful, allowing the nurses to shop for items a child really wants or needs. GOOD BUSINESS SENSE Carroll's Business Department has plenty of student news to boast about, with the latest installment: accounting majors Katie Goodrum, Mary Currin, Pete Markuson, and Maria Rustemeyer recently entered the 2nd Annual American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) Accounting Competition. This year's case competition offered students an opportunity to use forensic accounting skills to evaluate an international fraud case. In all, 215 four-member teams registered in this year's competition from 50  states, DC, Puerto Rico, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, and U.S. Virgin Islands. Top three teams will present their results to AICPA judges in Washington DC. Five Carroll business students also recently returned from the Certified Financial Analyst competition sponsored by the Spokane Society of CFAs. In this contest, teams must analyze a company and write up an analysis by the end of January, then give a professional presentation in February.  Our teams' faculty advisor is Associate Professor of Business Julie Mull (photo right). Carroll student team leader Pete Markuson, along with members Quincey Kuiava, Tom McSherry, Mark Wallingford and Kurtis Miros, met with their subject company, Sterling Savings Bank, last week for background critical to their analysis. Winners at regionals progress to the national/global competition in New York City. Last year, the finals involved the expertise of none other than Warren Buffett. BEANS AND RICE: THE PERFECT STOCKING STUFFERS Carroll's SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) club's "Let's Can Hunger" food drive campaign is underway, with a goal of collecting 5,000 pounds of nonperishables for donation to Helena Food Share. In addition to food collection, SIFE plans to provide training and materials to the needy, with financial budgeting and food preparation advice. Drop off your food donations in the collection boxes at the St. Thomas Aquinas Cafeteria in the Campus Center, the first and third floors of Simperman Hall, the main floor of O'Connell Hall near Financial Aid, Trinity Hall lobby, and near the mailboxes in St. Charles Hall. In other SIFE news, the club was recently notified that it was awarded a $2,000 grant from SIFE USA and American Free Enterprise to fund a project to work with the Chamber of Commerce.  With this grant, Carroll SIFE students will be holding a series of mini workshops to help small businesses in a variety of areas. DOUBLE YOUR MONEY, GET SOMETHING PRICELESS Donate now to Engineers Without Borders-USA Carroll College Student Chapter, and corporate sponsors will match your donation dollar for dollar. Act fast: there's a limit on the match. It's easy to do right now: Click on https://ssl.charityweb.net/ewbusa/yearend.htm Then, under "Your Donation," type in the amount you want to give. Under "Allocate Your Donation," select Montana and then Carroll College Chapter. Fill out the credit card and billing information and select "Donate Now." Your gift, supporting Carroll EWB projects in Mexico and Guatemala, has the power to immediately change and even save countless lives. Revenues from the spice farming will fund college for Santa Maria's kids. In May, a Carroll EWB team is hoping to travel to the Diocese of Helena Mission in Guatemala to begin construction work on the school building to strengthen it against earthquakes-EWB needs to raise $10,000 for construction materials. In Mexico, Carroll EWB has already cleaned up the water supply and created a water treatment system to keep thousands of nearby residents from falling ill, and they hope to create a similar project at the Guatemala mission. ALUMNI NEWS

In the News

Wayne (class of 1964) and Ann Miller (photo left), the 2004 recipients of the Carroll Borromeo Award for outstanding lives of service, were recently featured in the Catholic University of America Magazine's fall 2011 edition, celebrating the university's 125 years of social justice work (the Millers hold CUA master's). The Millers founded God's Love homeless shelter in Helena and continue to provide thousands of dollars in direct aid each month to the poor, with their financial assistance coming from their personal income. As Wayne notes in the story, "If you love people and if you love enough of them, you're going to take in their pain and you're going to suffer right along with them. But, if you give yourself to God, then it just works." Their inspired lives of service and humble love are vividly brought to life in the CUA Mag story, available online (starting on page 12) at: http://www.pageturnpro.com/The-Catholic-University-of-America/33296-CUA-Magazine-Fall-2011/index.html#14 Paul Petrino (photo right), class of 1990, has joined his older brother Bobby Petrino, class of 1984, on the coaching staff of the Arkansas Razorbacks.
