Engineering Change in the World

Carroll’s Engineers Without Borders (CC-EWB) continue to do transformative work at both the Santa Maria del Mexicana Orphanage near Colon, Mexico and at La Asunción, the local school in Santo Tomás La Union, Guatemala.

CC-EWB’s projects in Santa Maria have included developing a waste-water treatment system as well as a pipeline to deliver water to the local spice fields.  In La Asunción, CC-EWB is committed to improving the safety and health of the community by providing both clean water and safe facilities.

CC-EWB’s motto is “Inspiration Helps, but Action Makes the Difference” and it is through the generosity of others that they are able to travel to Mexico and Guatemala to continue their service and make a positive impact on the lives of the people living there.

To support their efforts, the annual, holiday-season campaign for CC-EWB is underway at: https://ssl.charityweb.net/ewbusa/pfp/carrollcollegeewb.htm

There has been a very generous response so far and the chapter with the largest number of donations and the chapter with largest dollar amount contributed will each be given a prize donation of $5,000. Last year, Carroll EWB raised nearly $12,000 and was in the top 10 out of nearly 300 chapters in both categories for the $5,000 prizes. With additional support, winning one of these prizes is certainly within their reach.

A One-Act Weekend

This weekend, December 6 & 7, the Carroll Theatre department is presenting a series of one act plays to showcase the talents of the student directors from the college’s Play Directing class. These five one act plays are replacing Carroll’s traditional Christmas show, instead bringing a variety of fun and thought-provoking plays to the main stage.

The students chose a diverse range of plays, so everyone is sure to find something they will love in these two nights of excitement, existentialism and exotic locales. To learn more about this weekend of one-acts, visit the Theatre Season page on the Carroll website.

The shows are Friday, December 6 and Saturday, December 7 at the Carroll Theatre, 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 for general admission and donation-based for Carroll College faculty, staff, and students.

Young and Rewarding

The Talking Saints forensics team won 37 awards and finished third among 29 universities at the Mahaffey Memorial Tournament held at Linfield College on November 15-17 in McMinnville, OR. Seventeen of Carroll’s 18 team members came home with awards. Boise State University won the tournament, followed by Whitworth and Carroll.

“We were very pleased with such a strong showing by our young team,” said coach Brent Northup. “We have no seniors and only one person with more than one year of experience, and two thirds of the squad is in their first year with us. Everyone was upbeat. Boise had a sensational tournament, and deserved the win. It was a Bronco Bash at Linfield. We’ve won this event with this many points in the past, but the bar has been raised.”

The Talking Saints dominated competition in the short preparation events, winning 14 awards in extemporaneous speaking and impromptu speaking. Six of the seven finalists in junior impromptu were from Carroll.

The Carroll team also was the most successful at Linfield in World Debate, advancing six teams to the championship rounds and winning 13 debate awards.

Three of four final teams in junior worlds championship round were from Carroll, and one of the open worlds teams as well. Freshmen Ian Hollander of Kalispell, MT and Trevor Waldorf of Homer, AK won Junior Worlds event.

Four other Saints won first place awards. Hollander won first in novice extemp, sophomore Desirae Kivett of Spokane, WA won first in junior program oral interp, sophomore Mark Schmutzler of Clancy, MT won first in junior extemporaneous speaking, and freshman AJ Kelso of Longmont, CO won top speaker in Junior Worlds debate.

Seven Carroll students won three or more awards, led by freshman David Harris of Tumwater, WA who won five awards, making finals in extemporaneous speaking, impromptu speaking, prose interpretation – and receiving a speaker award in junior worlds. Harris was named the fifth best novice competitor at the tournament.

Sophomores Anna Hoerner of Spokane, WA and Desirae Kivett, freshman Ian Hollander and junior Ryan Rhoades of Portland, OR each won four awards.

Other Carroll winners were sophomore Ryden Meyer of Portland, OR, junior Alaina Hull of Yakima, WA, freshman Mitch Lange of Boise, ID, sophomore Chris McClafferty-Helley of Santa Clarita, CA, sophomore Hanna Hillier of Jerome, ID, sophomore Nick Fuller of Seattle, WA, freshman Kyle Sessions of Spokane, WA, freshman Flora Waske of Eugene, OR, and sophomore Nick Modrow of Billings, MT.

The Talking Saints also sent students to Powell, WY in November for a small event, finishing third in sweepstakes and winning 19 awards. Carroll dominated World Debate and won five first place awards. Leading the way were Ryden Meyer, Mark Schmutzler, Nick Fuller and Kyle Sessions with three awards each. Also receiving awards were Mitch Lange, Alaina Hull, David Harris, Hanna Hillier and Anna Hoerner.

Carroll sent two teams to Edmonton to compete at the University of Alberta over Thanksgiving. The teams did well, but fell one spot short of advancing in a strong field of Canadian universities.

Next up for the Saints is the final regional championship tournament at Pacific University in Forest Grove, OR on January 24. Carroll is still in contention for a share of the conference title with a strong showing at Pacific.
