Give the Gift of EWB

Carroll College’s Engineers Without Borders (CC-EWB) continues to be a hallmark program at Carroll as they remain committed to improving the safety, health and economic well being of a number of communities in developing countries including the Santa Maria Orphanage in Mexico, at La Asuncion School in Guatemala, and their newest project at the Marian Home for the Elderly in St. Lucia. In addition, CC-EWB is considering future projects in Uganda and Ghana in Africa.

CC-EWB’s earthquake reinforcing project at La Asuncion School in Guatemala has made remarkable progress. Over the last two years, Carroll EWB teams have traveled to La Asuncion School and worked side by side with a local engineer and local builders at the school teaching them how the structural walls should to be built. What is particularly encouraging about this project is that now they are building additional walls on their own. Another Carroll EWB team will travel to Guatemala in January to build two more walls in another part of the school.

Because La Asuncion School is a critical resource to support community development in the Santo Tomas region, its survival in the event of an earthquake is critical.

CC-EWB’s motto is “Inspiration Helps, but Action Makes the Difference” and it is through the generosity of others that they are able to travel to Mexico, Guatemala and St. Lucia to continue their service and make a positive impact on the lives of the people living there.

To support their efforts, the annual, holiday-season campaign for CC-EWB is underway.

CC-EWB is well on their way to meeting their fundraising goal and thank everyone for their generous support of this worthy and transformational Carroll program.

In addition, Willis and Nancy Wetstein have graciously offered to match donations, dollar for dollar, up to a total of $10,000. Thank you Willis and Nancy Wetstein!

Behind the walls that are being built by local workers are four walls that were built in previous years by CC-EWB.

The photo shows local workers collecting materials for the concrete for the walls including a worker wearing traditional dress worn by the ethnic Maya people of Guatemala.

Christmas Concert

Join the Carroll Choirs as they perform a concert of choral music for Advent and Christmas on Sunday, December 14, 2014 at 4 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. Helena. The performance includes the Carroll College Choir, Chamber Choir and Women’s Choir. The public is welcome and admission is free although a freewill offering will be taken to benefit the music fund at the Cathedral of St. Helena.

The theme of the concert is “The Glories of Christmas,” as many of the selections are songs in joyful thanks for the birth of Christ. A highlight of the concert will be the world premiere of “Gloria!” composed especially for the Carroll Choirs by Dr. Lynn Petersen, Professor of Music. The lively piece abounds in energy and multiple interlocking rhythms for varied voice parts.

Special guests of the concert include Dale Fleck, who will play organ accompaniment and Jan Van Hook, who will guest conduct a selection performed by the Carroll College Chamber Choir. The concert also features student soloists Toby-Jeanne Almy, Symantha Bodden and Raena Whitney.

The Carroll College Choirs are directed by Dr. Robert Psurny Jr., Professor of Music at Carroll.
