Carroll Nursing Program Launches Mobile Health Unit

Mobile Health Unit

HELENA, MT – Carroll College is proud to announce the launch of a new Mobile Health Unit—an exciting advancement in the college’s mission to improve health outcomes across Montana by expanding access to preventive health services and providing students with hands-on clinical experience in real-world settings. While the launch was made possible through a generous estate gift, ongoing support from Benefis Health System is helping to ensure the long-term sustainability and impact of this important initiative.

The Mobile Health Unit—a fully equipped, towable trailer designed to deliver personalized assessment, screening, and education—will be used for the first time during Carroll’s annual Mock Mass Casualty Incident training event on April 29, 2025. Following its debut, the unit will travel across Montana to serve communities that are traditionally underserved or lack access to consistent healthcare.

“The launch of the Mobile Health Unit marks a transformative step in our mission to bridge healthcare gaps across Montana’s rural and underserved communities,” said Dr. Lauren Swant, Director of Nursing at Carroll College. “This innovative initiative not only enhances access to essential health services where they are needed most, but it also enriches the educational experience of our nursing students by immersing them in real-world community care. We are deeply grateful for the generous Benefis Health System sponsorship that ensures the sustainability of this program—its ongoing support will have a lasting impact on population health and on the future of nursing care in our state.”

Staffed by experienced Carroll College nursing faculty and students, the Mobile Health Unit will offer a wide range of services, including health screenings, nutrition and medication education, mental health support, and health education workshops. These services will be delivered at schools, community events, fairs, grocery store parking lots, and other accessible locations across Montana.

The initiative reflects Carroll’s commitment to advancing equitable, holistic healthcare while directly addressing the pressing challenges facing Montana communities. According to 2022 data from the Kaiser Family Foundation, 8.1% of Montanans are uninsured, and nearly 14% of adults reported forgoing medical care in the past year due to cost. Compounding these issues, data from the Montana Department of Health and Human Services indicates that the state faces ongoing shortages of primary care and mental health professionals. With roughly 44% of the population living in rural areas, many counties continue to struggle with limited access to essential health services.

This innovative, mobile trailer made its first public outreach at the Augusta (Montana) Rodeo in June, offering free blood pressure checks, hydration guidance, and vital health education to local community members. Our students have also participated in several cool community events like Helena’s Symphony Under the Stars and Alive@5, gaining invaluable experience in community-based care, health equity, and public health, all while fulfilling Carroll’s mission to bridge healthcare gaps across Montana.

Overall, Symphony Under the Stars was a great opportunity to interact with the community. They got to see what Carroll Nursing was all about, and for us as students, it gave us a glimpse of common health issues that people in the community are challenged with. I am excited to see how the mobile health unit can better serve the community in the future.

“Benefis Health System is dedicated to supporting the next generation of nurses as they work toward their career goals. We know that providing valuable clinical opportunities to nursing students greatly benefits those students, but also helps meet a variety of community health needs. We are proud to partner with Carroll College and ensure the Mobile Health Unit is there to provide educational opportunities and patient care for those who need it,” said Rayn Ginnaty, System Executive Vice President of Hospital Operations.

Carroll College’s BSN program is the second largest standalone nursing program in Montana and is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and approved by the Montana State Board of Nursing. With this new mobile health unit, the college will expand its ability to prepare practice-ready graduates while delivering meaningful care to communities that need it most.
