HELENA, MT – Carroll College has announced the appointment of James (Jim) Carney as its next Vice President for Finance and Chief Financial Officer, beginning September 8, 2025.

Carney is returning to Carroll, where he previously served as Assistant Director for Community Living and taught as an adjunct faculty member. His early years at Carroll left a lasting impression, and his return represents a full-circle moment in a career dedicated to mission, leadership, and service.

“We are excited to welcome Jim Carney back to Carroll,” said Dr. Jennifer Glowienka, co-president of Carroll College. “His extensive financial leadership experience, combined with his understanding of our community, will be a tremendous asset as we continue to plan for the college’s future and advance our mission.”

With more than 17 years of progressive financial leadership experience, Carney has built a proven record in budgeting, stewarding resources, restructuring, consensus building, and innovative problem-solving. He has served as Chief Financial Officer for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Helena since 2013 and was appointed Chancellor in 2022, providing broad financial oversight, implementing modern systems, and gaining extensive experience in budgeting, finance, IT, risk management, insurance, investments, real estate, and construction projects. Prior to this, he held fiscal leadership roles with the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services, managed nonprofit initiatives, worked in corporate accounting, and served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Guizhou, China.

Carney is known for fostering positive team cultures that emphasize cooperation and trust. His leadership style aligns financial strategy with organizational mission, consistently supporting growth, transparency, and programmatic success.

During the search process, Carney impressed Carroll stakeholders with his thoughtful responses, his ability to align financial strategy with mission, his collaborative leadership style grounded in consensus building and trust, and his clear understanding of the challenges facing higher education along with the creative, forward-looking approaches Carroll can take to meet them.

“I’m truly honored to return to the Carroll community and participate in its rich legacy of academic excellence and community impact,” said Carney. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with dedicated colleagues as we work together to steward the college’s financial future and support its mission of shaping the minds and hearts of tomorrow’s leaders."

Carney holds a B.A.in Business Administration from Seattle University and a M.A. in Public Service from Marquette University. He begins his tenure at Carroll on September 8, 2025, moving into the role previously held by Lori Peterson ’87, who is retiring after 32 years of dedicated service, including the past 15 years as CFO.
