Helena, MT — Carroll College is excited to introduce a new Cybersecurity major, set to launch in the fall of 2025. Offered through Carroll’s Mathematics and Computer Science department, this program is designed to prepare students for careers in the fast-growing field of cybersecurity by equipping them with the technical skills and strategic mindset needed to protect computer systems, networks, and sensitive data from cyber threats.
Carroll College’s Cybersecurity major is offered through a hybrid model that includes six online courses delivered through a consortial partnership with Rize Education and faculty from other academic institutions. This approach allows students to access specialized coursework and industry experts while benefiting from Carroll’s well-rounded liberal arts education, which cultivates critical thinking, ethical decision-making, and versatile problem-solving skills essential for success in cybersecurity and beyond. Additionally, students will benefit from the close faculty mentorship and personalized learning experience at Carroll.
"We’re really excited about the breadth of opportunities this program opens up for our students,” said Dr. Ted Wendt, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Carroll College. “The demand for cybersecurity professionals is skyrocketing and with our cutting-edge curriculum blended with a liberal arts focus, we are uniquely positioned to equip our graduates with the technical skills and critical thinking abilities they need to excel in this ever-evolving field."
Students in the Carroll College Cybersecurity program will learn to assess modern threats, defend digital assets from cybercriminals, and apply ethical hacking techniques to identify vulnerabilities in networks and systems. The curriculum blends theory with hands-on experience, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for careers as information security analysts, cyber threat intelligence analysts, security auditors, and compliance officers. Additionally, students will be positioned to pursue key industry certifications, such as the CompTIA A+ exam, which further enhances their employability.
Students will develop a strong foundation in both technical and interpersonal skills, preparing them for success in this fast-growing industry. Through interactive discussions, hands-on projects, and real-world problem-solving experiences, students will gain practical expertise that extends beyond the classroom. Instruction from industry experts will provide valuable insights into emerging threats and best practices, ensuring graduates are well-equipped to navigate the ever-evolving cybersecurity landscape with confidence and adaptability.
According to industry projections, cybersecurity professionals are in exceptionally high demand. In 2025, it is estimated there are close to 460,000 unfilled cybersecurity positions nationally, and employment in the field is expected to grow by 35% by 2031—seven times the national average. With an average salary of $112,000 and a 100% employment rate, cybersecurity offers stability, competitive pay, and opportunities for impact across industries, including technology, healthcare, finance, government, and education.
As reliance on digital technologies grows, the demand for skilled cybersecurity professionals continues to rise. Carroll College’s new Cybersecurity major reflects the college’s commitment to expanding academic offerings that align with student interests, address workforce needs, and develop ethical leaders prepared to navigate the challenges of an increasingly digital world.
