BodyFlow by Devan Hromchik

Dear fellow alums,

When one thinks about the human body, I wonder which dimension comes to mind first? Physical, physiological, emotional/mental, or spiritual? Have you been guided in your life to believe one or another is any more important than the rest?

In March of 2017, I took a certification course called BodyFlow. It is a yoga, thai chi, and pilates format that is created by an international fitness company called Les Mills. I had been teaching group fitness classes for several years prior, through high school and college. I was able to start my group fitness journey at Crossroads Sports and Fitness in Helena, MT. It was one of my favorite pieces of living and growing up in Helena.

By going through the nursing program at Carroll, I was able to learn about holistic and four dimensional care plans. Through this care plan development I became rooted in an understanding of multi-dimensional health and wellness. Mind, body, and spiritual overall well-being became ever more important to me during my time at Carroll.

Becoming a certified BodyFlow instructor has helped me grow deeper roots in mind, body, and spirit care. It has also allowed me to share this understanding with others through my love for teaching group fitness classes. We focus on overall balance and strength of all human dimensions. I have become very content in knowing how to balance my body.

This balancing begins with a development of self awareness. Before knowing how to keep your mind, body, and soul balanced one must know and understand what sort of balancing is required. Through group fitness, in particular BodyFlow, I have been able to combine all of these dimensions into one self-care activity. We strengthen and lengthen the physical body, center the mind and emotions, and meditate to control our spiritual well-being.

BodyFlow will not be for everyone, and teaching group fitness has become one of my greatest passions in life. My encouragement to all, is to find a self-care activity that helps to balance your mind, body and soul. Discover where your soul is fed, your body is challenged, and your emotions are elated. Mediation, yoga, and quieting the mind is helpful to connect with spiritual well-being. Working out quite literally raises mood, by releasing endorphins. Putting forward some sort of goal in working out also helps direct mindful challenge and coping.

My challenge is for everyone to adventure through this life seeking balance of mind, body, and soul. Find whatever it is that quits your spirit, sets your soul free, challenges your mind, and pushes your physical limits to greatness. Try BodyFlow if you are looking to start somewhere.

Let us not see any one dimension of the human body as superior to others. May we balance all that we are, in this complex and beautiful human body… and may we share that balanced being with others in this pursuit of happiness.

All my best to you as you take care of yourself!
