AUGUST 30, 2012

GET OUT YOUR HANKERCHIEFS

Longtime and much-beloved Carroll English professor and coach of our Smoker boxing team, Hank Burgess, died on August 28, 2012, after a courageous struggle with health problems (and persevering like the champion he was). A story on his leadership of the Smokers and the life-changing experiences he presented our students was featured in the Summer 2011 edition of Carroll Magazine (see it online, starting on page 4, at: http://www.carroll.edu/alumni/magazine/summer2011/movie.swf?pageNumber=)

Just last March, the college joined Hank and his family in celebrating completion of the Henry (Hank) Burgess Professorship in English, funded by Dr. Jerry Berberet, class of 1963, in honor of Hank’s legacy at the college.

The vigil will be Monday, September 3, at 7 p.m. and the funeral the following day at noon—both at the Cathedral of St Helena.  There will be a reception immediately following the funeral downstairs in the Cathedral’s Brondel Center.

WELL-OILED HANDS

On Wednesday, August 29, Carroll’s Nursing Department held its first-ever Blessing of the Hands ceremony for its new and returning nursing students, with 40 nursing majors and their professors joined by Carroll President Tom Evans and Dean Paula McNutt for the ceremony and reception. Nursing Chair Dr. Jennifer Elison gave the welcome and emceed the event, while Professor Kathy McGuire offerred a brief reflection; Carroll Chaplain Fr. Marc Lenneman blessed the oil.

To keep our future and current nurses mindful of their healing mission, their palms were anointed with oil and they received blessings. Afterwards, the group recited “A Nurse’s Prayer,” then the group witnessed Fr. Marc bless the nursing tree behind St. Albert’s Hall–this elm was planted last fall in honor of the Nursing Program’s successful 10-year accreditation visit (the program is currently accredited through 2022 with the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and the Montana Board of Nursing).
