Glacier Groupies

A group of Carroll alumni, parents and friends gathered in Glacier National Park July 26-28 to enjoy one of Montana’s great natural treasures. The weekend kicked off Friday with dinner on the terrace of Belton Chalet in West Glacier.  Those who took in the spectacular scenery while hiking the trail to Avalanche Lake on Saturday morning posed for us here.  After mass on the shore of Lake McDonald, everyone enjoyed a BBQ at the Apgar campsite, followed by a sunset cruise with fresh huckleberry pie for dessert.  Thanks to all who participated in this fun Carroll alumni weekend.

Symphony was a blast and helped to "create a hunger free community"

Our gratitude extends to the Helena community who made the 10th annual Symphony Under the Stars a joyous and memorable evening.  Concertgoers donated 12,288 pounds of food to Helena Food Share, setting a record for our local food bank.  Thanks go to Carroll College and Helena Symphony staff and musicians, and all the volunteers who made the event possible, including the Fighting Saints football, volleyball and track athletes who championed the donation bucket brigade.  Read more here.

Need a good, late summer read?

All incoming freshmen were asked to read the New York Times bestseller, "What is the What" by Dave Eggers, for their Alpha Seminar class this fall.

According to the book jacket, "the epic novel based on the life of Valentino Achak Deng, who along with thousands of other children--the so called Lost Boys--was forced to leave his village in Sudan at the age of seven and trek hundreds of miles by foot, pursued by militias, government bombers, and wild animals, crossing the desert of three countries to find freedom.”

The book is described as "an astonishing novel that illuminates the lives of millions through one extraordinary man."

Join our incoming class in reading the book, which will be discussed in the Alpha Seminar course that all freshman are enrolled in fall semester.

IN MEMORIAM

Beloved Carroll alum Francis Leo “Father Mac” McInnis died July 25, 2013 at age 83.  Graduating from Carroll College in 1953 was a mere beginning for Father Mac. He was known as a friend to the thousands of lives he influenced as an educator, a chaplain for the Montana Air National Guard, zealous Michigan State fan, and devoted family man.

“As priest, professor, and chaplain, he lived and taught the values centered on the uniqueness and dignity of each person, and he proved himself a servant leader inspired by the Gospel, particularly by setting aside personal gain and living a life of sacrifice, to build community and affirm the growth and faith lives of others,” said Candace Cain, executive director of development and alumni.

Father Mac spent the greater portion of his life as a full-time professor of Biology and later the director of graduate studies at the University of Great Falls.  Great Falls Central Catholic High School, which reopened in 2000, benefitted from his nurturing and passionate spirit for education.

Father Mac’s love for Carroll never wavered.  He was proud to be inducted into the Carroll College Alumni Hall of Fame in 2010.  Father Mac made frequent trips to Helena with his students from Great Falls Central Catholic to tour campus and encourage their interest in Carroll.

Services were held August 1 and 2 in the gym at Great Falls Central Catholic High School.  You may read the obituary here
