TAX DAY IS A DOWNER

Or rather a DOWNSY! Yes, today, April 15, is the annual Carroll College Downsy Day, which can be celebrated wherever a Saint happens to be. The day was named in memory of John Downs (Downsy), a longtime Carroll psychology professor who spread the message of loving your neighbor in everything he did and said. Downsy died of leukemia in the fall of 2002, but his legacy continues. In April 2004, President Tom Trebon signed a proclamation making April 15 "Downsy Day" on campus, when students, faculty, staff and alumni are called to perform unselfish acts of service, kindness, compassion, patience, generosity and love according to their own inspiration and in honor of John Downs.  Go ahead, we dare ya: do something good for someone today, whether it's volunteer work, helping someone in distress, visiting somebody who's got nobody, smiling as you greet your coworkers, or emailing the president of Carroll College to tell him how great his QuickNotes editor is!

EASTER BASKET FROM CAMPUS MINISTRY Next week's Easter observances of the Triduum will be celebrated on campus by Carroll Campus Ministry, and all are welcome to participate. Here are details: Tuesday: Tenebrae at 9 p.m. in Guadalupe Hall Chapel. Tenebrae (Latin for 'shadows' or 'darkness') is a Christian religious service celebrated by the Western Church during Holy Week, featuring the gradual extinguishing of candles while a series of readings and psalms are chanted or recited. Holy Thursday: 8:30 p.m. in Guadalupe Chapel Good Friday: 3 p.m. in St. Charles Chapel Easter Vigil: 10:30 p.m. in Guadalupe Chapel No Easter Morning Mass GET BLARNEY STONED SUNDAY This Sunday, April 17, is your sole chance this year to witness the verbal artistry of the nationally award-winning Carroll Talking Saints forensics team as it presents the annual "Night of the Talking Saints." The Talking Saints are on the road all year and only perform once in Helena during the academic calendar, so come on down to the lower level of the Campus Center at 7 p.m. for drama, comedy and outrageous commentary on issues of the day (probably not appropriate for young audiences). We're talking top talking talent, with this forensics news just in: Carroll College senior Kristina Buchan (photo left) was named an All American at National Individual Events championships, held on April 1-4 at the University of Nebraska-Kearney. Meanwhile, Carroll's top parliamentary debate team of Forrest Laskowski and Ryan Lorenz finished in the top 20 of the 150 teams competing at the National Parliamentary Debate Association championships held at Colorado College in Colorado Springs on March 17-19. To find out what the talk's all about, check out: http://www.carroll.edu/about/pressreleases.php?id=14754 WE'LL GIVE YOU A RUN FOR YOUR BUNNY This weekend brings the final two showings of our Theatre Department's production of The Tale of Peter Rabbit (and Benjamin Bunny). See it TONIGHT and Saturday, at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center, Old North, St. Charles Hall. Tickets are available at the door for $5 general admission, $3 for kids under 12. Senior theatre and education double-major Kelly Clavin directs this cast of Carroll thespians and local schoolchildren. St. Andrew School fifth grader Emma Rausch, playing the role of Peter's sister Flopsy, is the daughter of Carroll theatre alum John Rausch (class of 1986), himself a veteran of several Helena and Carroll productions. Another young Carroll theatre legacy in the cast is Molly Driscoll, a Bryant Elementary fourth grader and the daughter of Carroll Theatre Director Chuck Driscoll. More on the production is online at: http://www.carroll.edu/about/pressreleases.php?id=14763 GET JAZZED Next Tuesday, April 19, the Carroll College Jazz Combo will present a free, public concert, "Jazz Journey," at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center (Carroll Theatre, Old North, St. Charles Hall).  Seven students and two Carroll faculty members will perform a variety of jazz standards spanning five decades, including tunes by Harold Arlen, Hoagy Carmichael, Miles Davis, Red Garland, Jerome Richardson, Billy Strayhorn and more.  The final (meaning both "last" and "final exam") Jazz Combo performance of the year will occur on Wednesday, May 4, in the Carroll Campus Center from 10:15 to 11:30 a.m. The program, comprising the Jazz Combo students' final examination, will include performance selections not heard on the April 19 concert, plus some of the band's favorites from previous semesters. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information about the Jazz Combo and its concert series, contact its director, Dr. Lynn Petersen (photo left), Carroll associate professor of music, at 406-447-4303. EARTH DAY PREVIEW THIS SATURDAY! This Saturday, April 16, start those Earth Day juices flowing by offering your household recyclables to the S.A.V.E. Foundation and Growing Friends of Helena during the annual Trash for Trees fundraiser. The event, which raises money for planting trees and supports expanded recycling in Helena, takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Northgate Plaza on North Montana Avenue (parking lot for the Good Samaritan Thrift Store). This city-wide recycling drive takes it all: newspapers, magazines less than a quarter inch thick, office paper, glass, corrugated cardboard, aluminum cans, steel cans, Type 1 and 2 plastic containers and trays, cell phones, print cartridges, and rechargeable batteries from laptops or power tools. (For plastics, rinse bottles and remove lids; labels are OK but no oil or yogurt containers will be accepted.) And, speaking of Earth Day previews, next Tuesday, April 19, is the 4th Annual Grow Local gathering, this year entitled  "Making the Connection: Montana Food for Montana People" at the Helena Fairgrounds (98 W. Custer Ave.) starting at 5:30 p.m. This event is sponsored by The Growing Community Project in partnership with many local nonprofits including the Carroll Green Team. The event kicks off with a local food potluck (bring your favorite dish to share), followed at 7 p.m. by presentations by Jan Tusick, the program manager for Lake County Community Food and Cooperative Development Center, and by Dawson County Cooperative Extension Agent Bruce Smith. Admission is by donation. "DESTINY IS NO MATTER OF CHANCE. IT IS A MATTER OF CHOICE." WILLIAM JENNINGS BRYAN Carroll's Green Plan Group, a division of Carroll's Green Team, has developed a plan to guide the college to a more responsible future, with lower costs and lower impact on the earth, while raising the quality of life and education on campus. No plan is complete without public comment, and we need your feedback on our future! The Carroll Green Plan includes campus goals and strategies for energy use and production, food, water, landscaping, overall procurement, use and disposal of goods, green building practices and transportation. The Plan is on display now in the upper level of the Campus Center near the Hoff-Kavanagh room and online at  www.carroll.edu/resources/greenteam/projects.cc  You can shout back at the plan either orally, or by writing comments on the sheets posted at the Campus Center Green Plan display, or by emailing your opinions to green@carroll.edu.  Even if you just have time to read a section or two, we want your comments. STUDENT NEWS Last Saturday, April 9, Carroll class of 2012 political science and communication major Rachael DeMarce (photo right), a member of the Little Shell and Blackfeet tribes, was honored as the College Student of the Year at the Montana Indian Education Association awards dinner in Great Falls. Her award was based on her academics and volunteerism. Interning for Montana State Superintendent of Public Instruction Denise Juneau (who received a Carroll honorary degree last May), DeMarce has spent the past two years working on Indian Education curriculum and conference planning for the Indian Education for All initiative for teachers. DeMarce has also organized the Stepping Up program, which brings Native students to colleges, including Carroll. As reported in last week's QNs, she is a Gates Millennium Scholar who was recently selected as one of 40 students for the PBS American Experience program joining present-day students with the original Freedom Riders for a new ride of discovery. The Helena IR this week profiled our Human-Animal Bond Program, soon to be rechristened anthrozoology, including the doggie graduation ceremony coming up next Tuesday, April 19, at 7 p.m. in the Fortin Science Center Scola. The story featured the work of Carroll senior Rachelle Timmer, who trained canine Archie to recognize low blood sugar and alert a diabetic human companion that they need to take action. Archie has found an adoptive diabetic partner, and more HAB dogs need to find suitable companions to match their service-dog specialized skills. (Photo left: Timmer and Archie) Catch the story at: http://helenair.com/news/article_4ee8d8e0-6725-11e0-9963-001cc4c002e0.html   Last week's Grateful Saints (Carroll's student philanthropy education program) held its first Tribute to All who Give Day-"TAG Day" in common parlance-and it was indeed a blazing success, especially for a pilot project. About ten percent of Carroll's student body dropped by to write thank you notes to Carroll benefactors, with some students then heading out to get snapshots of self and friends near "tags" posted in campus structures.  Thanks to all our Grateful Saints. Two new fall classes in computer science are open to students seeking an extra one credit, and they're not just for the tech-experts. For beginners looking for programming skills made fun, try CS 189 Animation with Alice (Alice is well-known for getting kids and newcomers into programming science). For those of a more technical bent, we'll also be offering CS 289 Introduction to Linux/Unix, a class on installing Linux and using the command line. Both one-credit course will end by midterm. Check the Carroll website for more info, or email our professors, Dave Marshall (dmarshal@carroll.edu) or Phil Rose (prose@carroll.edu).
